Appointment with history on Wednesday 13 November at 6.30pm at the Allianz Cloud for the first match of the Cev Champions League of Allianz Milano. Coach Roberto Piazza’s team hosts the tough Belgian team Knack Roeselare. Even with a roster that apparently shouldn’t scare Milan, the team from the Flemish city of western Flanders (60 thousand inhabitants) has experience to spare in Europe and in the Champions League. This year’s participation will in fact be the 23rd participation for the Belgian company, for the 36th time in Europe. In the recent past we remember them as opponents in the Champions League group of Lube Civitanova (2022 season) and in 2023 only losing the Cev Cup to Bruno and Ngapeth’s Valsa Group Modena in the golden set, after having eliminated none other than Piacenza in the semi-finals.
Allianz Milano is included in Group C together with the Knack, the Austrians of Hypo Tirol Innsbruck and the Polish squadron of Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie, which starts as favorite for the lead in the group. Allianz Milano remembers Zawiercie’s opponents well from his last experience in Cev. After the round-robin round (home and away), the top five teams from the Pools directly enter the quarter-finals, while to define the other three teams, a further round is played between the five second-placed teams and the best third of the groups (the other third-place teams play the Cev quarter-final). In short, there are two really good boxes in the Pool and Allianz Milano does not want to miss this opportunity. The triple home round between now and December 18th requires a truly fiery end to 2024 for president Lucio Fusaro’s team.
