The preparation process for Consoli Sferc Brescia’s 11th season in Serie A continues with determination. Having concluded the training camp in Palmi with the first useful matches of the season, the Toucans will face a new test after a week of intense work. The American champions from UCLA, University of California at Los Angeles, are expected on Tuesday 17 September at the PalaGeorge in Montichiari at 7.30pm. The promising stars and stripes athletes won the top NCAA university championship for the second consecutive year on May 4th and represent the future US national team. In fact, it is no coincidence that John Speraw, coach of UCLA, is also the coach of the American men’s national team which won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics by beating Italy in the final. The “Bruins” (brown bears), as UCLA students are called, arrive in Italy after a European tour which also saw them as protagonists in Hungary and Slovenia. After Brescia they will also challenge Monza from the Super League and Siena, the Toucans’ championship opponent.
The Zambonardi boys will be faced with a very young but absolutely toned and motivated team that will attract the curiosity of many volleyball enthusiasts who will be able to access the PalaGeorge for free. Over the years UCLA has produced many champions starting with Karch Kiraly, elected best player of the century in the world in 2001. In the Californian team that physiologically “loses” the best athletes year after year to grow new ones, Andrew Rowan stands out, awarded as best NCAA director and he will be the one to lead the team on the field against Atlantis.
