The first main picture of the 2016-17 season is the one of a triumphant Modena team who won back-to-back SuperCup, the latest in front of its fans in a sold-out PalaPanini arena. This third success in the history of the club came at the expense of Perugia at the tie-break. The joy of one team matches the sadness of Perugia, who was so close to a dream debut in the competition. Indeed, they counted as many as five points advantage in the tie-break and even had a match point they could not convert. As for Modena they began the new season where they had left off. In 2015-16, the registered a historical treble of SuperCup, Italian Cup and league title, and they started the new exercise on top again.
It was not looking good for the hosts at the start of the fith set as Perugia sprinted off to an 8-3 lead. At 9-6, Della Lunga came on for Russel in the Perugia team but Birarelli and Zaytsev conceded two blocks (8-9). Berger tried to get his men on track (8-10) but the hosts scored three consecutive points to move ahead on two classic points from Ngapeth (11-10 Modena). Ngapeth again for 12-10 but the Block Devils tied it. Perugia’s outside hitter responded to Holt and scored an ace behind to regain the lead (14-15). But Petric and Le Roux turned things around before Holt scored the winning ace.

Dore Della Lunga (Sir Safety Conad Perugia): “When you lose a final 17-15 at the tie-break, one might think it’s unlucky but I like to think that one creates its own luck. So maybe tonight Modena created it and deservedly won it. We don’t want to take anything away from anyone because there was a trophy at stake, but tonight we understood we had the level of the best teams, and we have new indications on what to work on in training. We have a great player like Atanasijevic still out, and we have time to work : there will be other trophies to play for ».
