The game for third place of the SuperCup went to Civitanova, who came back from 2-1 down and survived three match points to win it at the tie-break. Looking at the stats, Lorenzetti’s team looked the better side on the serve and Blengini’s men were slightly sharper in attack. Civitanova was without Christenson and Juantorena on the bench. However, in a thrilling ending, the vice European champions tied it at 13 on a Sokolov miss hit. Lorenzetti’s men saved two match points but wasted three opportunities before surrendering on Cester’s serve.
Gianlorenzo Blengini (coach Cucine Lube Civitanova): “There is still a lot of work to be done in terms of organization and handling certain moments of the game. We had to make do with the players available. Some of our players, who knew the schemes because they were there last season, were missing. But we’re not hiding behind excuses, we try to play hard point after point. Today we hanged on, we sacrificed, we accepted to be in difficulty and came out of it as winners. I think that is the positive aspect we’ll take out of this tournament in which we finish third ».
Tsvetan Sokolov (Cucine Lube Civitanova): “We won a marathon against Trento. We proved we really wanted this win. It was important for us, losing is never enjoyable but in the end with our perseverance we managed to finish third. In this SuperCup our weaknesses were underlined, we know what to work on in the future. We will start immediately to prepare for the regular season. We’ll take care of all the necessary details to become a top team ».
Angelo Lorenzetti (coach Diatec Trentino): “We have a lot of work on, but the nine sets played in two days gave us a lot of information. Today, we lacked consistency in various fundamentals, and it has to be said we have been a bit naive, failing to score in certain situations that we had created, especially in the fourth and fifth set. Still, I remain confident because I have seen some quality plays which I had not seen in training, which proves we do have a good group ».
Simone Giannelli (Diatec Trentino): “We played two good games this weekend, but both Modena and Civitanova went one step further and deserved to win. In spite of the defeats, we know we have a quality team. We’re on the right track, we’ll just get back in the gym on Tuesday and work even harder. We still have some bad spells, but I think this is normal at this time of the season ».
