In its packed PalaPanini arena, Modena qualified for the SuperCup final thanks to a 3-1 win over Trentino. Lorenzetti’s team had the better stats but the hosts were more solid in the decisive moments. An outstanding Earvin Ngapeth (30 points) and some hard work in reception meant Modena will be able to defend its title in the final. Piazza’s men took a 2-0 lead but then could not seem to slow down Trento’s attack. They eventually managed to stay strong in the fourth and clinch it thanks to Petric’s fighgting spirit at the net.
Post game quotes :
Roberto Piazza (coach Azimut Modena): “This was definitely not an easy game, we knew it’d be tough, and we knew we were not at our best yet given that we’ve only been working all together for ten days. I am satisfied with the performance : the boys will get to know each other little by little but for now we obtained that first win and will now fully focus on tomorrow to try to win it ».
Nemanja Petric (Azimut Modena): “Coming back to the PalaPanini was fantastic, our supporters gave us a great push from start to finish and we have to thank them for that. Trento is a top team, but we are too, we have done an excellent job in various tricky situations, though we were not as good in others. I don’t know if we’re favourite tomorrow, I’m not really interested, I’m just focusing on ourselves and I believe in ourselves ».
Angelo Lorenzetti (coach Diatec Trentino): “This is the kind of games we expected of ourselves right now but that was not enough on the day to beat Modena. We’re a bit disappointed not to have sealed the second or fourth set, but given how it went we might have more regrets on that second set. We could have made it to the tie-break but Modena managed to hurt us with their rotation on the serve, we knew they were dangerous in that area. But I have nobody to blame, I think on the contrary that it was a useful experience for our future. We can improve and do more damage ourselves from the serve ».
Tine Urnaut (Diatec Trentino): “We failed to convert some opportunities, especially in the fourth set when we did not made the most of our advantage. We lacked consistency on the serve. I am really disappointed because I feel we were not that far from them and we could have obtained a great result. But it’s a useful experience for the future, you always learn from defeats like this ».
