CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE CIVITANOVA – SIR SAFETY CONAD PERUGIA 2-3 (25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 25-18, 13-15) – CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE CIVITANOVA: Fei 9, Juantorena 20, Stankovic 8, Priddy 8, Christenson 1, Cester 6, Grebennikov (L), Miljkovic 10, Cebulj 8, Podrascanin 6. DNP Parodi, Vitelli, Kovar, Corvetta. Coach. Blengini.
SIR SAFETY CONAD PERUGIA: Buti 5, Fromm, De Cecco 3, Kaliberda 15, Giovi (L), Russell 10, Tzioumakas, Elia, Atanasijevic 30, Birarelli 9. DNP Holt, Dimitrov, Fanuli. Coach. Kovac.
Perugia stunned Civitanova in semi-final Game 1. They came back from the Eurosuole Forum with a huge tie-break win that stops Civitanova’s 14-game winning streak. Led by the MVP Atanasijevic, who scored 30 points with 63% in attack (3 blocks, 3 aces), Perugia deserved to come away with the victory but it has to be said that the hosts might have paid the price for being out of action for so long. Blengini’s men had not played an official game in 18 days, since their last European game in Ankara on March 23.
The key moment of the tie-break came at 10 all when Atanasijevic went on the line to serve an ace and give Perugia an advantage they’d keep until the final 15-13.
Alessandro Fei (Cucine Lube Banca Marche Civitanova): “We probably stayed too long without a game. We made a mistake but it’s far from over so let’s focus on Tuesday’s game in Perugia. This defeat should serve as a lesson for us. We knew it would not be easy to get in the final and today we had the confirmation”.
Slobodan Kovac (coach Sir Safety Conad Perugia): “It’s really not easy to keep up with such a strong team like Civitanova. They’re capable of stepping up a gear at any moment with quality players coming off the bench. We did a great job of staying in it all the time. They probably paid the price for being out of action for so long. Let’s not get carried away now because there’s a long way to go”.
