The 2015-16 season begins with Modena’s triumph in the Super Cup in front of 5000 supporters in a sold-out PalaPanini arena. This is Modena’s second Super Cup in history following the one won in 1997 in Naples when Pupo Dall’Olio’s men had beaten the Cuneo of Silvano Prandi on a 3-1 score.

The new season begun where it had left off in the league final in May, with Trentino and Modena battling it out for the major honours. Unlike five months ago when Trento celebrated the national title in Modena’s arena, Modena came out on top this time.

And the atmosphere was special before it even started with 5000 singing the Italian national anthem behind the Volley Band.

Trento took an incredible first set to 37 before Modena won the next two by the minimum margin. But Trento fought back to push it to the tie-break. The decisive fifth set was very tight until Modena found a break near the end as Nikic delivered the knock-out punch and gave Modena its second Super Cup in history.

Angelo Lorenzetti (Coach DHL Modena): “Beating Trento is always an extremely tough task. We faced a top quality team, composed of great stars but we really played a good game, pushed by those extraordinary supporters who are second to none. Winning in Modena is really special. Now we’ll focus on the league, we can’t get carried away”.

Bruno (DHL Modena): “We had only trained a handful of times together during the week. Just like Trento, we were in a difficult situation, but I think that was a good performance. We’re thrilled, we wanted to give our fans the joy of this triumph and we made it”.

Radostin Stoytchev (Coach Diatec Trentino): “We did what we could, we did not prepare adequately but we won’t look for excuses. We have to consider what we did today as a good basis for the future. Let’s keep our feet on the ground and let’s get back to work in the gym, this is what we need right now. We know the way we played tonight is not enough yet to win games against strong teams. Our goal in the short term must therefore be to get everybody back to their best little by little and improve day after day and game after game”.

Mitar Djuric (Diatec Trentino): “That was a strange game, very difficult. Both teams had players who came back from international commitment just five days ago. It was a good night of volleyball, I’m just sorry I lost it but I really believe in this team, I think we can go far. We are young but we are eager to learn and win”.
