Perugia just loves the Champions League. Another brilliant performance led this time to a guaranteed first place in its group with a game to spare. The last round against Ankara will indeed have no influence on its current standings. Even if the Turkish side was to win it and tie on points, Perugia would have a better set quotient. The main architects of this latest victory were an outstanding Fromm, who scored 5 aces, and Atanasijevic who registered a superb 71% in attack for 19 total points. The key moment came in the second set when Perugia let a 12-6 lead slip away and was led 22-21. At 23 all, Fromm  sent two missiles from the nine meter line that had the arena erupting for joy.

Luciano De Cecco (Sir Safety Perugia): “We played well, we knew this was very important, especially for our confidence. We were coming off a few defeats and we needed a boost. We worked hard last week in the gym to get this win and now we can resume our league campaign with a positive attitude”.

ENERGY T.I. DIATEC TRENTINO : Kaziyski 14, Nelli 6, Birarelli 3, Nemec 8, Giannelli 5, Lanza 14, SolÉ 3, Mazzone 2, Colaci (L), Fedrizzi 5, Burgsthaler 10. DNP Zygadlo. Coach. Stoytchev.

Trentino’s road to the next round remained unimpeded. The Italians made their way to the Challenge Round by getting rid of the Romanian side of Craiova. 3-0 winners nine days ago in the quarter-final first leg, Stoytchev’s men made the double with a 3-1 win on home soil. In March, they will take on a team eliminated from the Champions League. As for the game, all the difference seen in the first leg in terms of level of play, tactic and physical attributes was as evident. Burgsthaller was named MVP: he scored 10 points, 4 of which were blocks. Meanwhile, Kaziyski celebrated its 300th appearance with 14 points and no less than four aces.

Radostin Stoytchev (coach Energy T.I. Diatec Trentino): “Once we got the first two sets that got us through we wanted to seal the game as soon as possible, in the third set. But we did not managed to do so because we struggled from the start and got a little nervous on a couple of decisions from the refs. But I did not want to go back to my initial line-up, I am convinced that some young players must learn to overcome certain situations on their own in order to get better. In the fourth set, we got back to playing at a good level and won it 3-1. This means we can already focus on the Molfetta game tonight, a match that ends an intense run in January for us”.

The draw for the CEV Cup challenge round will take place in Luxembourg  next week. There will be four teams coming down from the Champions League, one of them will be Trentino’s opponent. The Challenge Round will be played between the 3rd and 12th of March.
