COPRA ARDELIA PIACENZA – CMC RAVENNA 1-3 (23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 17-25)

COPRA ARDELIA PIACENZA: Marra (L), Le Roux 21, Vermiglio 2, Papi 6, Da Silva Pedreira Junior (L), Massari 6, Zlatanov 9, Ostapenko 7, Tencati, Kohut 7, Rodrigues Tavares. DNP Page, Ter Horst. Coach. Radici.

CMC RAVENNA: Mengozzi 9, Cavanna, Toniutti, Gabriele, Koumentakis 12, Goi (L), Zanatta Buiatti 21, Cester 7, Bari (L), Cebulj 17. DNP Ricci, Zappoli, Patriarca. Coach. Kantor.

Before kicking off the season, Renzo Ciardelli received the “Jimmy George” award as Piacenza was elected as the club having the most fair play supporters in 2013-14.

Just like in the Super Cup, the home crowd could sense its players were still looking for their consistency, while, unlike the host, Ravenna seemed to be firing on all cylinders. The visitors took the first set before Zlatanov and co dominated from start to finish the second. But halfway through the third, they faded and Ravenna regained control. Renan was named MVP with 21 points and 2 aces. Among the hosts, excellent performance from Le Roux (21 points, 3 blocks) and Papi (65% in reception and 71% in attack).

Andrea Radici (Coach Copra Ardelia Piacenza): “We did not manage to mentally recover to get the kind of performance we hoped for. We struggled on the serve. We still have a lot of work to be a team but what I liked was the attitude. We have to understand that we’ll have to overcome a lot of tough moments if we want to be in the top part of the table”.

Andrea Bari (CMC Ravenna): “We have worked all week for this game and fortunately we managed to score when it mattered most. We get along very well as a group. We wanted a good performance, but we did not expect one that good against a top team like Piacenza, one of the best in the league”.

MODENA VOLLEY – SIR SAFETY PERUGIA 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-20, 25-21)

MODENA VOLLEY: Mossa De Rezende 6, Sala 2, Petric 1, Boninfante, Casadei 1, Rossini (L), Ngapeth 9, Piano 8, Verhees 8, Kovacevic 20, Vettori 15. DNP Donadio. Coach. Lorenzetti.

SIR SAFETY PERUGIA: Buti 3, Fromm 9, Paolucci, De Cecco 2, Giovi (L), Barone 1, Beretta 10, Vujevic, Atanasijevic 26, Fanuli (L), Sunder 1, Maruotti 4. DNP Tzioumakas. Coach. Grbic.

Modena had never beaten Perugia before this 70th championships opening round at the end of a battle that lasted over two hours. Sharp serving was key: 12 aces, while Perugia made 24 mistakes. Modena varied its game a lot while Perugia seemed to rely too much on Atanasijevic, whose 24 points were not enough.

MVP: Kovacevic

Thomas Beretta (Sir Safety Perugia): “I really wanted to do well in Modena, where I really enjoyed my time last season. This was the first round we all wanted to play well. I think Modena had a better attitude: they served very well and played a great game. In my opinion, we are about the same level, we just have to believe more in ourselves. There were no argument, just a bit of tension between Bruno and Atanasijevic because that’s part of their character. We proved we had a good team, but Modena strengthened its squad and tonight they deserved the victory”.

Andrea Sartoretti (Sport director Modena Volley): “It’s been a good game with some excellent volleyball at times and a good crowd. This was an important win against one of the best teams in the league. We were obviously a bit tense in this debut, and we could see that in the first set, but we manage to settle in thanks to our serve and good team play, and got the result we wanted”.

REVIVRE MILANO – EXPRIVIA NELDIRITTO MOLFETTA 0-3 (21-25, 20-25, 19-25)

REVIVRE MILANO: Bencz 14, Bermudez 1, Horstink 10, Kauliakamoa Jr, Temponi Araujo, Patriarca 4, Rizzo (L), Mattera 1, De Togni 5, Dos Santos 4, Valsecchi. Did not play Cerbo, Preti. Coach. Maranesi.

EXPRIVIA NELDIRITTO MOLFETTA: Candellaro 4, Noda Blanco 10, Sket 11, Del Vecchio, Spirito 5, Romiti (L), Kooistra 14, Piscopo 9. Did not play Hierrezuelo, Puliti, Bossi, Blagojevic, Porcelli. Coach. Di Pinto.

Bitter start to its SuperLega campaign for Milan, swept home by Molfetta. Too many mistakes on the serve (17) and a poor reception gave the upper hand to Molfetta, who was well guided by young Spirito, MVP of the match.

Marco Maranesi (Coach Revivre Milano): “Our first touch was not good, we struggled on the serve and reception. The rest is just a consequence. Difficult to explain why we found it so hard. At one point, we just had to limit ourselves to make sure we sent our serve on the other side, which obviously made their setter’s work a lot easier. We had to line up Bruno Temponi although he was not hundred percent”.

Vincenzo Di Pinto (Coach Exprivia Neldiritto Molfetta): “The way we were on court from a technical-tactical standpoint turned out to be better than our opponent. We had an excellent game, the boys made less mistakes than Milan already in the first set. I was a bit worried halfway through the third set because we started to make more mistakes, but then we managed to get back on track. Congratulation to Spirito, he’s young and without much experience, but took his responsibility and did a great job. It was not easy, I like the way my team behaved”.

ENERGY T.I. DIATEC TRENTINO – TONAZZO PADOVA 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-13)

ENERGY T.I. DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 8, Nelli, Birarelli 8, Zygadlo 4, Nemec 14, Thei, Lanza 13, Solé 10, Colaci (L), Fedrizzi 1, Burgsthaler 1. DNP Giannelli, Mazzone. Coach. Stoytchev.

TONAZZO PADOVA: Mattei 9, Orduna 4, Giannotti 8, Balaso (L), Gozzo, Volpato 4, Garghella 1, Aguillard 1, Quiroga 11. DNP Vianello, Rosso, Beccaro. Coach. Baldovin.

Trentino began 2014-15 with a dominant performance. On a day of returns (Stoytchev, Zygadlo and Kaziyski), the hosts put the emotions aside and did the job against a Padova team that still has to find its identity. Rosso out, and with Quiroga in the team for just a few days, Baldovin’s team never managed to give any resistance to Trento. Solé was named MVP as he got 3 blocks, one ace and 80% in attack.

Sebastian Solé (Energy T.I. Diatec Trentino): “We played with determination and were aggressive from the first rally.  We really wanted to prove we are a good team and the straight set win consequently arrived. This is the perfect start we wanted, I am also glad I have won the MVP award which is not often given to a middle blocker. But let’s focus on Sunday’s trip to Perugia now”.

Valerio Baldovin (Coach Tonazzo Padova): “This was a tough game to play, they made very few mistakes and put us under pressure. We kept up with their rhythm in the first set, but then we struggled to stay close. I like the way we played, but we obviously have to make less mistakes and increase the pace in coming games”.

TOP VOLLEY LATINA – VERO VOLLEY MONZA 3-1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23)

TOP VOLLEY LATINA: Manià (L), Rauwerdink 8, Sottile 3, Skrimov 6, Tailli, Van De Voorde 14, Rossi 6, Starovic 19, Semenzato, Urnaut 5. DNP Ferenciac, Pellegrino. Coach. Blengini.

VERO VOLLEY MONZA: Elia 9, Gotsev 9, Quesque 4, Tiberti, Galliani 2, Padura Diaz 16, De Pandis (L), Jovovic 5, Botto 14, Wang 1, Bonetti 1. DNP Procopio, Vigil Gonzalez. Coach. Vacondio.

Latina took all three points against Monza in the first round coming back from 1-0 down to win it in four sets. Both teams felt the tension of the opening day. Latina dominated at the net with 17 blocks to 9, while they struggled in attack (36% to 44%).

MVP: Simon Van de Voorde

Simon Van de Voorde (Top Volley Latina): “I am happy with the victory of the team. Being MVP does not matter, what matters are the points we obtained. I think I had a good debut in Italy, but I know the season is very long and tough”.

Daniele De Pandis (Vero Volley Monza): “Except for the result, I think this was a positive debut in the SuperLega. We did not manage to take points, we knew Latina was a tough place to go to. We have to try against Piacenza now, and it won’t be easy”.
