Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata – Sir Safety Perugia

First meeting between the two clubs in the cup, while they are tied with one win each this season in the league. Macerata is the current league leader but has had to face to major disappointments this season with the loss of the Super Cup against Trento and the elimination of the Champions League at the hands of Piacenza. They will be keen to make it into their third consecutive final and bring back a trophy they have not won since 2009 (3-1 vs Cuneo, team they knocked out in the quarters). Perugia arrive with the excitement of a team making its debut at this level after a great run in the league. It is currently third in the table and clearly not afraid of the big stage. It certainly does not shy away from showing its ambition.

PAST ENCOUNTERS: 4 (3-1 Macerata)

In the cup: None

Alberto Giuliani (coach Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “We are excited to take part in the Italian Cup final four and this semi-final against Perugia, even if we still have some doubts about the line-up that will start. But whoever will play will surely be ready for the fight. Perugia has reached an excellent level, this will be a tough battle for a place in the final. The Italian Cup is one of our targets and we will do everything possible to win it”.

Slobodan Kovac (coach Sir Safety Perugia): “Being in the Italian Cup Final Four is already a fantastic result for us, for the club and the city of Perugia. The first ever participation of the club. Now we’re there, we don’t want to stop. I hear people say we have nothing to lose, in my opinion we do have so much to lose. On Saturday, there will be a final at stake, which can easily happen just once in a life time. We have to do everything possible to play our best volleyball and play a good game. That’s the only way to face Macerata, a team we all know how strong it is. May the best team win, we’re coming off good results, we’re confident, the victories have given us a lot of energy. Hopefully, that will help us to have a great performance”.

Macerata in the Cup

19 participations:

4 trophies won: 2008–2009 vs Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo, 2007–2008 vs M. Roma Volley, 2002–2003 vs Sisley Treviso, 2000–2001 vs Sisley Treviso.

Perugia in the cup:

1 participations: 2012-13 (Knocked out in the quarters by Trentino).

Copra Elior Piacenza – Diatec Trentino

So many clashes at the highest level in the league but this will be the first ever in the Italian Cup. Piacenza had not reached this stage for five years despite two attempts in the quarter-finals. Captain Zlatanov, who had injured his ankle against Molfetta, is doubtful. Alessandro Fei could celebrate the 500 points scored in the Italian Cup. Trento made it to this stage by knocking off Modena. They have taken part in six final four, and won 3 of them. Coach Serniotti has had to deal with an unbelievable run of bad luck in terms of injuries: Sokolov, then Szabò, Birarelli. The club had to sign Kay Van dijk a couple of weeks ago. But now everyone is on the way back, Sokolov and Birarelli will indeed travel with the squad.
