Show time as Piacenza played host to the league leaders Macerata. This encounter turned into one of the most spectacular ones of the season so far, and we’ll be glad the two will meet up again in the Champions League. Without Zlatanov (muscle problem) Piacenza remained unbeaten at home (last defeated in February 2012 by Trento) and handed Macerata its first loss of the season. De Cecco was named MVP as he distributed to perfection, especially in the first two sets and in the tie-break.

Luca Monti (Coach Copra Elior Piacenza): “We did a got job of cancelling out Macerata’s lead in the fifth set and forgetting the mistakes made in the third and fourth set. We let it behind us and played face to face again with Macerata”.

Francesco Cadeddu (Ass.coach Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “In the first set, we played well even if Piacenza had more plays to convert and served better. They played very well in the second set too both in attack and on the serve, they faded in the third and fourth, while we stepped up in those sets. This results does not trouble us that much, we still have a big advantage on Piacenza. Maybe we were not as hungry for points as they were. What I can say is that it’s been a superb game, which is promising ahead of the two Champions League encounters to come.”

CASA MODENA – BRE LANNUTTI CUNEO 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 27-25, 25-18)

CASA MODENA: Manià (L), Sala 6, Sket, Deroo 18, Quesque 8, Bartman 28, Beretta 8, Mossa De Rezende 3, Krumins. DNP Donadio, Kampa, Bossi, Hendriks. Coach. Lorenzetti.

BRE LANNUTTI CUNEO: Rauwerdink 3, Antonov 18, Gonzalez, De Pandis (L), Kohut 11, De Togni 8, Coscione 2, Rouzier 20, Maruotti 7. DNP Marchisio, Casadei. Coach. Piazza.

Modena sealed this first half of season with a victory over Cuneo, earning the 6th place and its ticket for the Italian Cup quarter-finals. The fans were looking forward to seeing their new player Bruninho: on his debut he gave them great plays and emotions to go with it. The home side was indeed led by the Brazilian and Bartman, while they did a great job blocking.

MVP: Zibi Bartman (Casa Modena)

Angelo Lorenzetti (Coach Casa Modena): “I am happy, I seemed to wait forever for this game. We’ve started to take points again, I have to congratulate the boys who were there in the last few days, we carried out some very simple training sessions, and they did exceptionally well. Now we’ll resume our usual routine and hopefully keep progressing. We’re sixth with 18 points, just like last season, with a few wins less, but some tie-breaks often obtained on a come-back. Let’s think one day at a time and focus on working on our game”.

Roberto Piazza (Coach Bre Lannutti Cuneo): “The Modena arena is not like any others, no matter if there is Bruninho or not on court. The Brazilian proved what a great player he was, but we certainly could have done better in certain situations. We’re a bit disappointed”.

DIATEC TRENTINO – CALZEDONIA VERONA 1-3 (25-15, 25-27, 17-25, 23-25)

DIATEC TRENTINO: Sintini, Birarelli 8, Solé 4, Ferreira 9, Suxho 4, Lanza 4, Sokolov 17, Szabo 1, Colaci (L), Fedrizzi 11, Burgsthaler 3. DNP Thei, De Paola. Coach. Serniotti.

CALZEDONIA VERONA: Zingel 15, Blasi, Pesaresi (L), Ter Horst 14, Gasparini 12, White 16, Boninfante 2, Bellei, Anzani 7. DNP Coali, Gabriele, Centomo, Gonzalez. Coach. Giani.

Extremely satisfying end of first half of season for Verona who handed the Italian Champs of Trento their second home loss of the season. Not many would have bet on Verona after a near-perfect first set from the hosts. But then they stepped up a gear, especially in attack and serve, and they became irresistible in the clutch time.

MVP: Boninfante.

Emanuele Birarelli (Diatec Trentino): “We might have been decieved by our first set. Everything seemed too easy and it just could not go like that. The game got tighter from the second set and we became insecure. We were not playing well and we failed to stay in it by pulling together as a group, something we would have been capable of doing. We struggled more than the usual in attack, credit to Verona too as they gained more and more confidence as the game went on”.

Dante Boninfante (Calzedonia Verona): “These are three points we did not expect. It’s true we were coming off a defeat against Piacenza but at the same time we have never lost faith in our ability. It’s important that the team finds consistency playing at a high level. This is an important victory, we really went for it and deserved it. Trento’s mistakes were provoked by our excellent performance, we tactically prepared this game well and we’re over the moon. The most encouraging thing is that we achieved it after quite an unconvincing start”.

TONNO CALLIPO CALABRIA VIBO VALENTIA – EXPRIVIA MOLFETTA 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-8) – TONNO CALLIPO CALABRIA VIBO VALENTIA: Trinidad De Haro, Plot, Steuerwald 4, Randazzo, Farina (L), Forni 6, Cisolla 21, Villena, Crer 11, Gavotto 18, Ogurcak 17. DNP Sardanelli, Presta. Coach. Blengini.

EXPRIVIA MOLFETTA: Piscopo 3, Mazzone, Izzo 1, Del Vecchio, Cesarini (L), Sabbi 27, Zanuto 16, Fornés Jul 5, Casoli 19, Saitta 6. DNP Diamantini, Porcelli. Coach. Cichello.

The new year could not have started any better for Vibo Valentia. They defeated Molfetta at the end of a long battle, and this fifth victory gave them their fourth consecutive qualification for the Italian Cup quarter-finals. Cisolla was back in the starting line-up two months after the last time and was named MVP.

Alessandro Farina (Tonno Callipo Calabria Vibo Valentia): “It’s been a very hard-fought encounter, we did well to stay in the game when we got caught in a difficult moment. We’re glad and now we hope to make the upset in Piacenza in the cup quarter-final”.

Giulio Sabbi (Exprivia Molfetta): “We had a go at it, but in the tie-break we started off losing a few break points and coming back is never easy. Shame because we were so close to make it into the cup, but let’s look at the positive side of things, we obtained our first point on the road”.

ALTOTEVERE CITTà DI CASTELLO – SIR SAFETY PERUGIA 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 25-23) – ALTOTEVERE CITTà DI CASTELLO: Franceschini, Fromm 16, Carminati, Lensi (L), Corvetta, Dolfo 2, Sartoretti, Massari 4, Tosi (L), Piano 10, Van Walle 24, Rossi 10, Marchiani. Coach. Radici.

SIR SAFETY PERUGIA: Buti 7, Paolucci 6, Petric 18, Giovi (L), Cupkovic, Barone 10, Della Lunga 1, Mitic, Vujevic 5, Atanasijevic 13, Semenzato 1. DNP Della Corte, Fanuli. Coach. Kovac.

Città di Castello won the first derby played against Perugia in the top division.

MVP: Van Walle.

Gert Van Walle (Altotevere Città di Castello): “It was great to come back and play like that in this superb atmosphere. The result might seem unexpected but if we play at our best we can do great things. We were all together again after three weeks and we did a great job of finding our game from the start”.

Nemanja Petric (Sir Safety Perugia): “Unfortunately, we got off to a poor start and that got us a little nervous, which only worsened the situation. We have not been effective in any fundamental, but especially on the serve and in reception. This allowed our opponents to collect a deserved victory”.

CMC RAVENNA – ANDREOLI LATINA 3-2 (25-22, 24-26, 21-25, 25-23, 15-12)

CMC RAVENNA: Mengozzi 15, Kauliakamoa Jr, Cricca, Toniutti, Tillie 13, Koumentakis, Patriarca 1, Klapwijk 20, Cester 7, Bari (L), Cebulj 19. DNP Jeliazkov, Scarpi. Coach. Bonitta.

ANDREOLI LATINA: De Rocco 9, Candellaro 4, Rossini (L), Sottile 3, Michalovic 5, Skrimov 21, Verhees 12, Tailli 1, Paris 1, Starovic 6, Fragkos 11. Coach. Santilli.

Without Noda Blanco and Candellaro, but with an excellent game from Skrimov who substituted Noda Blanco, Latina surrendered at the tie-break in Ravenna.

MVP Mengozzi

Roberto Santilli (Coach Andreoli Latina): “I am sorry with the way the game ended. We were without Gitto and Noda Blanco already before Candellaro’s injury, which left us with just one middle blocker. This has consequently limited our attack. We could also have won 3-1 but instead we go back to Latina with a defeat. Still, the team showed great character and deserve praise”.

Marco Bonitta (Coach CMC Ravenna): “With all the things that happened I don’t feel like a coach that has just won a tie-break. I have been expelled and I don’t think I said anything particular. The volleyball today was not good at all”.
