Show time right from the word ‘go’ in the league final with a first spectacular game between Trento and Piacenza. The world champs made it 9 positive results in a row against Piacenza but tonight they needed to show great character to come out on top. Indeed, the first set had been negative on all fronts for them but they started over from the second set as if nothing had happened. They got loose and started to dominate at the net with 14 total blocks, 8 from Djuric. They could also count on a superb Stokr who made up for the poor night from Juantorena and Kaziyski on high balls. As for Piacenza, they could not add to the brilliant first set, in which Fei proved unstoppable, as Papi and Zlatanov were not effective enough at the net in the long term. Besides, Fox has not played at his best in reception which prevented De Cecco from distributing as well as he’d like to. Piacenza has not won in Trento since May 2009, on the day they won the league title.
Jan Stokr (Itas Diatec Trentino): “With the first set lost, we used our serve to bounce back. We used the same weapons that allowed Piacenza to take the opening set. Once it started to go in, the rest followed and we became more effective in every other area of the game as the crowd really got us going”.
Luca Monti (Coach Copra Elior Piacenza): “Led by Fei, we played really well the first set, but then we lost our way because of their precise serving. Playing in such a packed arena adds up the pressure, and we really struggled once we lost control of the game, we progressively lost our composure. In the following set, we found it hard to get back in it, we lacked consistency. Even De Cecco had difficulty taking good decisions for the team at certain moments. Disorganization on court and the difficulty to get back in the game meant we lost it, playing only in flashes. We’ll have to be more accurate, especially with Trento playing like that at the net, their blocking is scary, and Stokr is in top form”.
