Maliye Milli Piyango Ankara had the better of Latina in the Cev Cup semi-final first leg in Turkey in a game that has not been played at a great level. In order to qualify for the final, the Italians will not only have to win the return leg at home but also the consequent golden set. There has been four very different sets, with coach Prandi shuffling his starting six a lot in order to find the solution to turn things around. But Ankara proved better on the serve (7-4) and made less mistakes (27-31).

Gianrio Falivene (President Andreoli Latina): “We haven’t played too well, rather poorly actually. But we’ll have a chance to redeem ourselves on Wednesday in the Latina’s PalaBianchini arena. We’ll need a great one”.

2013 Challenge Cup

Quarter-final first leg:

Stroitel Minsk (BLR) – Copra Elior Piacenza (ITA) 0-3 (18-25, 22-25, 22-25)

STROITEL MINSK – COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA 0-3 (18-25, 22-25, 22-25)

STROITEL MINSK: Radziuk 11, Bazin 2, Busel 5, Liashchynskas 3, Akulich 16, Hernandez Cardonell 3, Likharad (L), Pranko 1, Mikanovich 5. DNP Chebatarou, Labetski, Khilko. Coach. Sinhayevski.

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA: Marra (L), Papi 7, Fei 11, Simon Aties 14, Zlatanov 10, Holt 7, Tencati, De Cecco 3. DNP Latelli, Corvetta, Maruotti, Vettori. Coach. Monti.

Seventh sweep in a row in the Challenge Cup for Piacenza, who got rid of Minsk in just over an hour of play, although this has been the tightest contest so far in the competition for the Italians. Akulich (16 points) and co managed indeed to stay close in all three sets before Piacenza managed to go over the hump every time right at the end. Simon registered 91% in attack with 14 points and 4 blocks, while Fei had 4 aces in his 11 points.

Luca Monti (coach Copra Elior Piacenza): “We needed to get to know our opponents to get organised a bit. This is why we had a slow start in the first set. We took our foot off the pedal too much at the end of the third set but the important thing was to win it 3-0. At 11 all in the third, Fei destroyed their reception but Minsk remains the strongest team we’ve met so far”.
