Latina came back from Germany with a straight set victory in the Cev Cup challenge round first leg. Now the Italians will have a chance to seal the deal without having to play the golden set. It’s been a tight encounter but Latina has been more effective in attack (49% vs 36%) even if they were blocked 14 times.

Silvano Prandi (coach Andreoli Latina): “It was a rather tight game, they did not play at their real standard. They got off to an excellent start but then we managed to get in the game and make it hard for them. They might have felt the pressure playing at home. We have won the first of three possible episodes. They will surely be free of any pressure in the return game, we’re expecting a very tough one”.

The first Challenge cup game of 2013 was a success for Piacenza, which only needed an hour and 15’ to get away from Gabrov with a 3-0 victory. Marra had a good game despite a slight injury, Holt finished top scorer while the team played well on the serve (11 aces) and at the net (9 blocks). Piacenza registered a 42% in attack versus the 33% of the opponents.

Luca Monti (coach Copra Elior Piacenza): “It’s not been a difficult game. The gym was already packed an hour before the start, that was great to see. Gabrov was surely expecting something different but we played a good game. In spite of our many mistakes on the serve, we had 11 aces. And the blocking helped us seal the third set. We have to stay focused in the second leg to obtain our qualification into the quarter-finals”.
