Serie A1 round 4

Four tie breaks winners: Trento, Modena, Piacenza and Roma.

First wins for San Giustino and Castellana Grotte

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO – ANDREOLI LATINA 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16) –

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO: Henno (L), Parodi 10, Fortunato 5, Wijsmans 19, Grbic 2, Peda 10, Volkov 10. DNP Galic, Montagna, Carletti, Nikolov, Patriarca, Rossi. Coach. Giuliani.

ANDREOLI LATINA: Kovacevic 11, Popelka, Kohut 4, Gitto 1, Sottile, Cortina (L), Pieri (L), Spairani 2, Vujevic 9, Starovic 11, Giombini. DNP Nonne, Labardi. Coach. Medei.

The serve proved to be Cuneo’s winning weapon against Latina. In his first game as Italian, captain Wijsmans was named MVP (67% in attack, 83% in the second set).

Wout Wijsmans (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “I am happy wit the way my new season began. It’s been hard to be out, but I have finally started and with a win. I had fun on court, the training on the serve in the past three weeks paid off. I did fine even if I lost my rhythm a bit in the end. The coach decided to give rest to Nikolov and send Peda on: The group of us who did not play in the World Championship and that have been training regularly since early September, we will  be called upon in the next games to give a hand to the ones who were busy all summer long. This will help them have a breather every now and then”.

Francesco Pieri (Andreoli Latina): “We hoped we could at least get a point in Cuneo, but they have been really well-organised and they served extremely well. We really struggled to receive it. We were constantly under pressure because of their serve, it was hard to build our game and consequently we did not manage to do much. Despite all this, I still think we are a good team, if we play up to our potential, we will be able to stay up without much problems”.

RPA-LUIGIBACCHI.IT SAN GIUSTINO – MARMI LANZA VERONA 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-20) –

RPA-LUIGIBACCHI.IT SAN GIUSTINO: Zhukouski, Van Den Dries, Dias 16, Giovi (L), Finazzi 6, Nikic 13, Maric 12, Cester 4, Steuerwald 1. DNP Schwarz, Bartoletti, Braga, Lo Bianco. Coach. Zanini.

MARMI LANZA VERONA: Latelli, Pajenk 8, Brunner 5, Meoni 1, Lasko 23, Smerilli (L), Lotman 6, Cala Gerardo 7, Herpe 3. DNP Kosmina, Zingel, Bolla. Coach. Bagnoli.

San Giustino gathered its first victory of the season at the expense of Verona. Both teams came on court with the AVIS tee-shirt, which promotes the donation of blood. Fabricio Dias was named MVP.

Claudio Sciurpa (President RPA-LuigiBacchi.it San Giustino):“We have found the ideal place where to do volleyball. This was a good game, the group fights on every ball, they are humble but they never put their head down. We deservedly won the three points against an excellent team, with a starting six composed of experienced players. I’m sure we’ll enjoy more positive moments”.

Maurizio Latelli (Marmi Lanza Verona): “They have found in San Giustino a nice city where to have a volleyball team. There was a great atmosphere, really thrilling. As for us, we have never managed to settle down. Our strength is the dig but tonight we did not retrieve much. We made too many mistakes, we did not take care of the ball. They played better than us”.

ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA – M. ROMA VOLLEY 2-3 (25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 13-15) –

ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA: Rauwerdink 19, Krumins, Forni 12, Buti 8, Rooney 22, Travica 3, Gavotto 17, Shumov, Exiga (L). DNP Cetrullo, Pesenti, Zito, Molteni. Coach. Monti.

M. ROMA VOLLEY: Poey 4, Zaytsev 12, Paolucci 1, Lebl 9, Uriarte 2, Tomatis, Cesarini (L), Saraceni, Bencz 18, Yosifov 13, Corsano (L), Cisolla 12. DNP Corsini. Coach. Giani.

Third consecutive defeat for Monza, who failed to dedicate a victory to the Gabana family and the president that passed away a year ago. A strange game, Monza had dominated the first two sets before surrendering in a poor end of tie-break. Rooney MVP.

Alberto Cisolla (M. Roma Volley): “They got off to a better start, while we were probably a bit tense, maybe because they were given as stronger than us. We played our part, from the third set we loosened up and eventually won it. It’s probably not been our best performance in terms of play but after the Forli match, it was important to show something positive and I think we did that”.

Marcello Forni (Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza): “At some point, they have stepped up a gear, they became aggressive on the serve and when Paolucci came on we had no answer, he changed the game. We wanted to do well and we definitely tried to, unfortunately it didn’t go as we wanted, even if there has been some improvements. This was an important game for us, we wanted the win for our President and for Marcello, who is surely watching us. He knows we tried our best, but unfortunately they have done well too and in the end it did not go our way”.

SISLEY TREVISO – COPRA MORPHO PIACENZA 2-3 (25-21, 21-25, 26-28, 25-18, 13-15) –

SISLEY TREVISO: Szabo, Fei 28, Horstink 17, Kovar 2, Papi, Farina (L), Boninfante, De Togni, Bontje 7, Pujol 2, Maruotti 13, Bjelica 9. DNP Vanin. Coach. Piazza.

COPRA MORPHO PIACENZA: Popp 11, Semenzato 2, Marra (L), Gonzalez 9, Ruiz 1, Perazzolo, Nilsson 21, Zlatanov 21, Holt 6, Tencati 4, Boschi. DNP Massari. Coach. Lorenzetti.

Treviso continued its tour de force. After Modena and Cuneo, it faced Piacenza and lost at the tie-break. On Wednesday, it will start its European campaign in Turkey.

Roberto Piazza (Coach Sisley Treviso): “We have to know how to win those games, but not at the tie-break, a lot before that. We have wasted a lot in the second and third set. We did not manage to seal the deal when we were ahead and we let Piacenza gain confidence. It’s really difficult to comment on what happened in the fifth set. We had a big lead and we let them cut the deficit by making terrible mistakes and completely losing it in certain situations. We’ll have to analyse that this week. The stats are in our favour, but not the final result, I don’t like that. Shame, now we have to focus on the Cup game, but I am a bit disappointed because we should have the character to win these types of games”.

Luca Tencati (Copra Morpho Piacenza): “We fought hard to stay in the game, we wanted to make it tough for them who were favourite, and we managed to do that. We stayed in it, with a good dig, it was not always pretty but we remained aggressive and we pulled together. A really great victory, in some part credit to us, Treviso has also made a few mistakes but we showed character”.

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA – ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO 2-3 (25-20, 21-25, 25-15, 17-25, 11-15)

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Lampariello, Savani 24, Paparoni (L), Vermiglio 1, Marchiani, Conte 8, Stankovic 6, Martino 6, Vadeleux 3, Van Walle 1, Omrcen 18, Podrascanin 5. DNP Cacchiarelli. Coach. Berruto.

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 13, Leonardi, Birarelli 13, Della Lunga 11, Zygadlo, Vieira De Oliveira 4, Sala 2, Bratoev 1, Sokolov 2, Colaci (L), Stokr 22, Garcia Pires Ribeiro 3, Bari (L). Coach. Stoytchev

A tie-break was needed to separate the two teams that were still undefeated so far in the league. In the end, the one to stay with a hundred percent record will be Trentino. All in all, this was a real marathon, a tense game with great moments of volleyball. Savani MVP.

Mauro Berruto (Coach Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “The positive thing is that, with our full squad, we offered another excellent performance, I’m talking about the first set. Then, I sent on Conte, who is still very young, in his debut in the A1, I think it’s important not to forget this. Losing two crucial players in the same game, the way it happened to us, is to say the least a pretty unusual thing that makes everything a lot more complicated for you. A win would have been worth gold. We have been inconsistent but this is still normal at this period. Well keep working to try to improve immediately in the aspects in which we have struggled”.

Radostin Stoytchev (Coach Itas Diatec Trentino): “Without Juantorena and with Kaziyski not fully fit, winning at the tie-break against Macerata has to be considered a real breakthrough. I am therefore satisfied with the result and with how the team reacted after the severe loss in the third set”.

CASA MODENA – TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA 3-2 (23-25, 27-25, 14-25, 25-17, 15-13) –

CASA MODENA: Manià (L), Ciabattini (L), Fabroni 1, Kooistra 11, Dennis 16, Berezhko 8, Kooy 12, Casadei 5, Esko 3, Creus Larry, Casoli 8, Diaz 3, Piscopo 10. Coach. Prandi.

TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA: Rivera Caamano 8, Coscione 5, Feroleto, Suljagic 8, Anderson 20, Ferraro, Kindgard, Baroti, Simeonov 21, Fanuli (L), Nikolov 15. Coach. Di Pinto.

Another victory obtained in the fifth set for Modena which had the better of Vibo Valentia in what has been a thrilling game. MVP Cristian Casoli.

Silvano Prandi (Coach Casa Modena): “I feel like this team is a complete work in progress. We are working a lot, sometimes we get off track, sometimes we play good volleyball. One thing is for sure, we have shown once more our capacity to come back from tricky situations”.

Vincenzo Di Pinto: (Coach Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “We are a very young team, some of the boys are in their first year in Italy, and we’re also missing some players: Today is like a victory for us. Somebody had offered me a point before the game, I’d have immediately accepted. Then, with the way things developed, we are obviously disappointed to have lost”.
