The situation is becoming complicated in the Champions League for Piacenza. Panathinaikos left the Italians no chance in the Greek capital. There were many mistakes made from both part. The beginning of game was tense, and tight, but thanks to some good serve and concentration at the net, Piacenza snatched the first set. Rinaldi and co struggled in reception in the second set, though, and Panathinaikos took advantage. The game was decided in a tight third set. Piacenza managed to tie the game at 22 as Urnaut and Grassano had recently come on but the Greeks eventually capitalised on its fourth set point (29-27). Then, Piacenza surrendered halfway through the fourth set.

Piacenza’s chance to clinch second spot lies totally on the next encounter in Poland next Wednesday against Friedrichshafen.

SELVER TALLINN: Stals (L), Meresaar 8, Ouekallas 9, Rosenblatt 7, Ruul 9, Kivisild 8, Petrovs 2. DNP Loftesnes, Koresaar, Artjoms, Nolvak, Nommistu.

Cuneo’s winning run continues in the Cev Cup. In the 8th of final first leg, it came back from Tallinn with a 3-0 victory. Nikolov, who had the flu last week, was clearly back in form finishing top scorer of the game. Coach Giuliani gave Patriarca another game as Parodi was rested.

“Tallin is a very physical team, with a good serve and skills at the net. In the previous round they have got rid of Liberec with ease, and this is a country with an important history in volleyball” had said coach Giuliani a few days before the game “It’s a team that doesn’t play with the same starting six in the league and in the cup, which makes them very difficult to study”.

The return leg will be on Wednesday 13 January at 7pm. If Giuliani’s team goes through, it will meet the winners of Tourcoing versus Podgorica. The French team easily won its home game.
