SERIE A1 TIM

8th round starts with Montichiari vs Verona

Montichiari versus Verona will open a weekend of competition in the Serie A1. This encounter will put face to face two of the most impressive teams of this beginning of season. The court advantage could be a factor as the PalaGeorge gym is one of the only three, together with Macerata’s PalaFontescodella and the PalaTrento, still to be beaten. Besides, Verona has been having difficulty on the road, obtaining just one win away from home.

On Sunday, the attention will turn to the remake of last season’s league final between Trentino and Piacenza. It will be bottom versus top as Padova takes on Macerata, with the home side desperately looking for its first points of the season. Forli will try to confirm the recent improvements as it faces Cuneo, who just qualified for the next round of the Cev Cup. Treviso heads to Perugia, who will try to erase from their memory the 3-0 defeat against Piacenza. Following the brilliant upset in Treviso’s Palaverde, Vibo Valentia will now try to obtain its first home win of the season against an inconsistent Martina Franca. Last but not least, Pineto will face Modena on Monday night and it will be live on Sky Sport.

ACQUA PARADISO GABECA MONTICHIARI vs MARMI LANZA VERONA

Past encounters: 8 (6-2 Montichiari).

Last game: Acqua Paradiso Gabeca Montichiari – Marmi Lanza Verona (5th round return games in 2006/07).

Record chaser: Daniel Allan Howard is just one block away from the 400. Verona’s Andrea Semenzato needs 11 points to reach the 1000, and 4 blocks to get to the 200, while his teammate Marcus Popp will celebrate his 100th game in the Serie A against his old club.

Alessandro Paparoni (Acqua Paradiso Gabeca Montichiari): “Verona is a very good team who’s playing excellent volleyball. It will definitely be tough on Saturday, like all the games of our league, and that’s what is nice about this championship. There are surprising results every Sunday because it’s a very homogeneous league”.

Marcus Popp (Marmi Lanza Verona): “We have what it takes to do well and beat any team, we just need to be focused and play with fighting spirit. We know that everyone trains hard every week and that surely shows on court. Montichiari is playing very well and has obtained quite a few points. It’s an especially good team in front of its home crowd. Our aim remains to stay up and only once we’ll have made it could we start thinking of something else”.

Serie A2: Bassano hosts Isernia, while Bologna is away against mantova. Derby between Roma and Latina.

After the midweek round the Serie A2 is back this weekend with the 9th round. One of the main fixtures is the derby between Roma and Latina. Daniele Ricci’s team is 9 point ahead of Rome, but it will have to play to its full potential in order to stay close to the league leaders. Both tie-break winners in midweek, Bassano and Bologna continue to fight for the leadership. Bassano hosts Isernia with Vincenzo Tamburo back in the team, while Bologna travels to Curtatone to take on Mantova, which piled up three consecutive win since setter Paolucci returned to action.

Loreto will try to keep its amazing run going against Città di Castello, who is the only team so far that took a point of Bassano. The duel between Catania and Gioia del Colle should be a tight one, while there will be some extremely important point at stake in the game between Castelfidardo and Castellana Grotte, who is far away from the place it would like to be. Santa Croce plays host to Crema in a game with two of the most interesting setters of the league: Marco Falaschi and Michele Baranowicz.
