Modena – Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo wins the challenge at PalaPanini against Cimone Modena at tie break. Sold out in Modena with 5.048 people in the audience. Prandi plays Parodi again as a spiker rather than Abbadi. Giani, on the other side, lines up Rinaldi libero making his debut in the championship in front of his own supporters and Casoli in for Dennis. The five sets are a rollercoaster of emotions for everyone. Cimone plays their first set (25-21) after having gone ahead (20-17) thanks to Murilo’s ace and Andrè’s attacks.

In the second set the music changes. Bre Banca Lannutti flies to 3-10, Modena seems to lack the strength to react but it is just a partial feeling. Ricardo and Andrè take the lead and take Cimone to 18-14;  it seems to be the decisive break but Cuneo comes back. It’s duce time then Gonzalez closes with an ace (25-27).

The third set is more straightforward. Prandi goes with Abbadi from the beginning but it is the whole guest team who offers a high level performance. Modena struggles in attack (4 blocks against them and 44% positivity) while Cuneo puts pressure on them from the nine metres. It ends on 19-25 and in the 4th set, when the ending seems written in favour of the guests, Giani’s men get even with Sartoretti (26-26) and close with a block by Sidao on Felizardo (29-27). tie break starts with Cimone Modena flying supported by the audience enthusiasm. It’s 5-1 straightaway. Cuneo does not lose it though and point after   int they come back. Gonzalez blocks Casoli (11-11) and it is duce. On 17-17, Abbadi spikes a new match ball which goes through with Sartoretti’s subsequent mistake (18-20).

Andrea Giani (Cimone Modena): “We played a good match but I must be honest, I am very upset about the defeat. We grabbed the match by its hair again and we should have won it. If we want to step up quality wise we need to learn to close these matches”.
Silvano Prandi (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “We could have won in the 4th set too but from a morale point of view it was important to stand up again in the 5th set and win it. One of the key moments was the 2nd set; we could have gone under 2-0 but we came back. Wijsmans the best? it is not a novelty for me, he is an extraordinary player ”.
MVP: Wout Wijsmans (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo)

Piacenza – Copra Nordmeccanica Piacenza hosts Famigliulo Corigliano. the match becomes decisive after the home defeat against Itas Diatec Trentino. The guests, after the surprising victory in Montichiari and a dry defeat at home (0-3) against Modena, are looking for fundamental points in terms of safety.

The home team starts well, with a careful blocking and an aggressive service which had not happend for a while at Palabanca (16-12). Corigliano does not give up and goes on 19-18. Mr Lorenzetti replaces Bjelica with Paolo Bravo. The Red&White come back though and start using their potentials in attack (Zlatanov and Rodriguez). Negative for the guests though especially Kovacevic: first he lets Meoni block him then he invades and gets replaced by Maric (spiker). The Serb cannot do any better though, he gets a wrong serve and gives the home team the set (25-20).

The following set seems more uncertain, the guests start well but Piacenza manages to get hold of the match again led by Zlatanov: Meoni serves him even in the most difficult situations and he replies in the best of ways (16-13). Temporary black out for the home team and Gallotta and Maric take advantage (18-18). It is head to head. Rodriguez gives Piacenza the set point but it is nulled (24-24). It is Zlatanov again who after a long play and a digging miracle by Sergio finds a golden point going over the triple block (26-25). The opponents’ mistake gives Copra Nordmeccanica the set (27-25).

Corigliano suffers too much and is not able to come back. Good for Piacenza instead with a long serving turn by Bjelica who scores three aces (6-0). Piacenza makes very little mistakes in this part of the match and goes on 16-7. Copra Nordmeccanica manages well (25-17). An important step to reach the Final Eight who will play in the Italian Cup.

Angelo Lorenzetti (Copra Nordmeccanica Piacenza): “ We have not started very well in attack then we relaxed and the digging made the difference”.
MVP: Israel Rodriguez (Copra Nordmeccanica Piacenza)

Treviso – Big Match at Palaverde on Boxing Day with Sisley Treviso and Itas Diatec Trentino who end 2007 it with a real show. Still without Alessandro Fei, who will start training again tomorrow, Sisley won the first set which the Trentini seemed to have in their favour up to 14-10. That is when the ex Stefan Hubner with Hortink and Gustavo go wild and bring the result to 25-19.

Itas does not agree though, Nikolov and Kaziyski’s percentages increase nut it is middle blocker Birarelli series of points which break the balance, Sisley is not able to recover and Itas gets even with a 25-19.

In the third set balance is the king, the teams take over in turns with great intensity: Treviso nulls a set point, captain Papi does magic, then Hubner and Horstink sign the points of the 26-24.

In the 4th set the Italian champions take off and Itas does not react: Gustavo (MVP) blocks and attacks with continuity, Cisolla’s percentages increase and Pujol distributes attacks to all his team mates, sending all of them (5) on double figures, while Grbic lacks in alternatives to the Bulgarian couple.

Mission accomplished for Treviso who steps into the Final Eight of the Cup, while Trento still stays high in the standings.

Renan Dal Zotto (Sisley Treviso): “Great match, I am satisfied, we put our heart in it from the beginning to the end, fighting against a very strong team who had moments of great intensity throught the match. I must thank Cisolla who sacrificed his role due to Fei’s absence. Today, everyone played well, Pujol especially managed teh match well tactically by giving the opponents very little certainty and distributing the attack very well “.
Radostin Stoytchev (Itas Diatec Trentino):
We are a new and young  team who lives day by day so losing this one is fair enough, but it is a shame because we could have managed some situations better. At one point I thought we could have done it or at least grabbed one point but we were not continuous and we left them with very high percentages, especially to their strong middle blockers.”
MVP: Gustavo Endres (Sisley Treviso)
