Sir Susa Vim Perugia rejoices for its fourth success in the Del Monte® Italian Cup. Angelo Lorenzetti’s boys, in their third triumph, cameback to win 3-1 against Mint Vero Volley Monza who still played an excellent Final Four, despite the difficulty caused by Takahashi’s absence. In front of over 9000 spectators (sold out) the team of president Gino Sirci took control of the game after the defeat in the first set thanks above all to the performances of Plotnytskyi, awarded as Del Monte® MVP of the event, of a concrete Semeniuk (18 points) and an excellent Flavio (16 points); among the Brianza players Szwarc scored 22, Galassi, never tamed, 12 with 4 aces.
At the Unipol Arena there was also space for youth volleyball, because the President of Lega Pallavolo Serie A Massimo Righi and the president of the FIPAV Bologna Territorial Committee awarded the winners of the Italian Territories Cup, an event held in parallel with the Del Monte® Italian Cup, won by the Territorial Committee of Rome.
The National Anthem was sung by the children’s choir of the Teatro Comunale of Bologna and a minute of silence was observed in memory of Gigi Riva. At the moment of the starting six, the D.D.WE.CO, a group of percussionists and dancers, accompanied the players onto the pitch and ignited the passion of the fans. The fans present at the Unipol Arena were also entertained by the “Liberi Di… Physical Theatre” company, founded in Milan in 2007, which produces and creates innovative acrobatic shows that involve the public with the universal language of body movement.
A positive moment from Loeppky gives Monza the first break of the match (6-9), Szwarc (8 points in the set) scores the 9-13 and Lorenzetti calls time out. Leon enters the serve and favors the recovery of Sir (15-17), but Mint Monza holds and closes with Galassi’s ace (22-25).
Coach Eccheli immediately calls time out in the second set because the Perugians start with a clear 3-0. The Monza team were not intimidated and remained close (9-8), but were pushed back by Ben Tara and Semeniuk (16-13). The advantage remains and Sir Susa Vim draws level (25-21).
The point-to-point continues in the third set, made up of overtaking and counter-overtaking, then a turn of service by Plotnytskyi launches the “Block Devils” (9-6 and Eccheli time out). Mint Vero Volley’s reaction was slow to arrive (14-7) and the Umbrians went 2-1 in a set in which Semeniuk attacked with 100% (6 points).
Lorenzetti time out at 6-10 in the fourth set, Perugia goes five down (7-12) then gets back up with Solé serving (14-12). Ben Tara is hit by cramps after the 22-20 attack, Herrera enters for the grand finale, which awards Sir Susa Vim Perugia the 46th edition of the Del Monte® Italian Cup.
The moment of the awards ceremony was exciting because Lega Pallavolo Serie A first commemorated with the words of President Massimo Righi four great figures from the world of volleyball who recently passed away: the historic manager of Ravenna Giuseppe Brusi, the dean of volleyball journalists Carlo Gobbi and the former secretary of FIPAV Gianfranco Briani and finally the lawyer. Guido Martinelli, whose widow, Mrs. Marisa, presented the lifetime achievement award to Max Colaci, in his sixth Italian Cup won, the fourth with the Perugians after the two won with Trento.
The president of the Fipav Emilia-Romagna Reginal Committee Silvano Brusori honored the referees of the match with a plaque: Marco Zavater, Umberto Zanussi, Giuseppe Curto, Alessandro Cerra, Francesca Righi and Enrico Dandolo.
The second place, Mint Vero Volley Monza, was awarded medals by Gianmaria Manghi, head of the political secretariat of the presidency of the Emilia-Romagna Region, and by the vice-president of Lega Pallavolo Serie A, Albino Massaccesi, and with the plaque by Roberta Li Calzi, councilor for sport and budget of the Municipality of Bologna.
Then the party began for Sir Susa Vim Perugia: first the Italian Cup rosette was handed over to Gino Sirci, president of Sir, by Massimo Righi and the Fipav president, Giuseppe Manfredi, who also hung the medals around the necks of the Umbrian players winners’ medals.
Alexander Boricic, President of the Cev, awarded Oleh Plotnytskyi, Del Monte® MVP of the Final. The Del Monte® Italian Cup fell from the top of the Arena together with the dancer Valentina Marino to the hands of president Righi, who handed it over to captain Wilfredo Leon.
