The one in which Yuasa Battery was the absolute protagonist in the 79th Serie A2 men’s volleyball championship was a season with record numbers: in the 17 championships played so far by Grottazzolina in Serie A, in fact, it had never happened to finish in first place regular season, a record which has never been questioned and has been maintained since the first day played on 15 October.
A truly dream season so far for the Grotese team, who however now have the duty to reset everything and prepare for another championship, much more complex and convincing than what has been so far: the playoffs. In fact, Yuasa Battery is waiting to know who they will have to face in the semi-final, between Prata and Ravenna. Game 1 in Grottazzolina set, in all probability, for Thursday 11 April at 8.30 pm, with the possibility that the event could be brought forward to Sunday 7 April (6 pm) only if none of the quarter-finals reach Game 3 A rather unlikely circumstance, given the general leveling of the tournament and the teams taking part in the playoffs. In the meantime, the Yuasa Battery does not miss a training session and will prepare for the post season by hosting the Macerata team (Serie A3) for a joint training session on Friday 29th at 6.15pm.
However, returning to the season played so far, what is most impressive, especially for those who love numbers, is the number of rankings in which the Yuasa Battery excels, both individually and as a team.
Starting from the total points scored, which sees coach Ortenzi’s team excel with 1835 scores in the 109 sets played, ahead of Brescia (1826 points in 112 sets) and Cuneo (1796 points in 103 sets). Grottazzolina always ahead of everyone in winning attacks, 1463 once again ahead of Cuneo (1437) and Brescia (1436); and even in perfect receptions no one did better, 653 balls placed in the hands of Marchiani, thirteen more than Aversa, Cuneo further behind with 590. Second step of the podium, however, as regards winning serves, ranking in which is Brescia looking down on everyone with 112 aces, three more than Fedrizzi and his teammates, followed by Prata with 100.
A shower of records also in terms of individual statistics, with Breuning Nielsen a true star in the total points count, with the incredible number of 670 scores scored in 26 matches, almost one hundred more than his closest pursuer, Kristian Gamba (Cantù) , stopped at 578 and followed by his Danish compatriot Jensen (Cuneo) with 551.
