Azzurro is the colour (and it won’t be the only one) in the 2024/205 roster of the Delta Group Porto Viro: the official purchase of the opposite of the Under 22 national team Edwin Arguelles Sanchez, born in 2003, 199 centimeters tall, in the last season playing for Aurispa DelCar Lecce in Serie A3.

Born in Havana but with an Italian passport, Arguelles is a product of the Vero Volley Monza youth team which, in the 2021/2022 season, called him up to the first team for some Super League matches. After being named best spiker of the Under 19 National Finals, in the summer of 2022 he joined the Under 20 national team and signed with the Lupi di Santa Croce in Serie A2. Another summer, that of 2023, and other fundamental stages in the rise of Arguelles, who triumphed in the Junior League with Monza (being elected MVP of the final), won world silver with the Under 21 national team and moved to Lecce in A3. The season in Salento, which has just ended, is that of his consecration as a rising star of Italian volleyball: he scored 553 total points between the regular season and playoffs, entering the top 5 of the scorers in the category.

In the next few weeks (from 9 to 14 July) the new Delta Group opposite should (the official invitations have not yet been issued) be involved with the U22 national team at the European category championships in Holland. Meanwhile, his first words as a black and fuchsia player arrive: “Many people convinced me to choose Porto Viro, mainly coaches who spoke highly of coach Morato to me, telling me that he will be the right figure to continue my growth. Obviously I thank the club for the trust it has shown by choosing me, I still don’t know the staff and the environment well but for now I’ve only had good feelings.

The excellent year in Lecce represented a positive turning point for Arguelles (“Thanks to the club and the team that was built I was able to express my full potential. The more the championship days went by, the more my way of being in the game improved. campo”), who can return to A2 with more certainty than the season spent with Santa Croce: “It will certainly be better this time, last year I was able to start an entire championship and also the experiences in the national team are helping me, especially to interpret the different situations on the pitch with a more open mind.
