At 18.15 on Monday, in front of the RAI Sport cameras, the first serve of the 2022/23 Scudetto Final is scheduled for the best of five matches between the hosts Itas Trentino, runners-up at the end of the Regular Season, and the outgoing champions of Cucine Lube Civitanova, who reached fourth position at the end of the first stage.
The visiting team holds the last three Scudetti assigned and is in its sixth consecutive Final, while the hosts return to play the last act of the SuperLega after that of 2016/17. It was Lube who blocked the way for the Trentino players, who won the decisive series of the tournament, giving the Gialloblù another disappointment after the victory centered on the advantage of the tie break on the Milan V-Day of 2011/12. In the Play Offs, only once has Trento managed to pass the cookers’ exam unscathed, that is in the 2009/10 Semifinal, while the red and white qualified against Itas in the 2018/19, 2020/21 and 2021/22 Semifinals.
Scheduled for Monday the overall direct clash n. 91, with Civitanova ahead 51 to 39 in the calculation of victories. Both teams are in their ninth showdown for the Scudetto, but Itas has collected four banners with a percentage of 50% in the last act, while the cooking association has been able to capitalize on the chances by raising the Scudetto cup to the sky as many as 7 times out of 8 attempts, with regret for the only decisive series lost, in 2017/18 in Game 5 against Perugia away from the friendly walls. A curiosity is the background to the Bulgarian face-to-face between Alex Nikolov and Matey Kaziyski, the father of the young red and white talent played and won the tricolor in 2007/08 together with the yellow and blue veteran with the Trento shirt.
Since the birth of the Play Offs, this will be the Scudetto Final number 41. Seven times a team that finished fourth in the Regular Season has played the last act, with a balance of six defeats and only one victory. The only one to achieve final success was Modena in the 2001/02 tournament. Frequent presence in the final act of teams exiting the regular season as seed number 2, with a balance of 13 wins and 12 defeats. In the history of the Championship, ever since the introduction of the Play Offs, only Piacenza (2008/09) has won the title, losing a total of 13 matches between the Regular Season and the second phase. On the eve of the Final, Lube is already at 13 defeats and if they win the title by losing at least one match, they would sign a new all-time record. Trento, on the other hand, is currently at 11 defeats and if it were to win the Italian flag, it would equal Piacenza at 13.
