The week ahead in Europe

2017 Champions League

In the second round of the group phase, Modena will be on the road in Poland on Tuesday night to take on Belchatow, which was surprisely stunned by Craiova in the opening encounter. Piazza’s men are coming off a marathon won in the league against Milan. Group D is proving unpredictable as Perugia had to work hard to clinch a tie-break win over Ljubljana.

Civitanova is ready to step up a gear after the defeat conceded in Berlin. Bottom in the Champions League grou, they are however firmly in comand in the SuperLega after a comfortable win over Piacenza while Modena lost a point against Milan. They will try to take all the points against the Czech of Dukla Liberec, who took a point against Rzeszow in the topening match.

On Thursday it will be Perugia’s turn to get on court. Winner of Ankara, Birarelli and co wil play host to the Belgium side of Roeselare, defeated at the tie-break by Belgorod last week. In the league Perugia made it seven straight against Padova

2017 CEV Cup

On Tuesday night in the CEV Cup, Piacenza will be in Byelorussia to take on Minsk in the 32nd of finals return leg. Giuliani’s men will need to be as solid as in the first leg when they won 3-1. They need just two sets to go through to the next round. In the league they are coming off a defeat against the leaders of Civitanova. If they were to qualify, they would take on the Austrians of Innsbruck, coached by Francesco Cadeddu, who’s been Giuliani’s assistant for almost ten years.

Already qualified for the 16th of finals as seeded team, Trentino will meet the winner of Hurrikaani Loima (Fin) and Dobrudja 07 Dobrich (Bul) at the beginning of January.
