Modena is the new champion. Lorenzetti’s men had the better of Perugia at the tie-break and sealed this final in just three games. This is theirs 12th league title after the ones celebrated in 69/70, 71/72, 73/74, 75/76, 85/86, 86/87, 87/88, 88/89, 94/95, 96/97, 01/02.
This is the third ‘hat-trick’ in history made of SuperCup, Italian Cup and League title. Treviso had done it twice in 2003-04 and 2004-05.
The coaches that have led Modena to those 12 titles are Franco Anderlini (1970, 1972, 1974), Edward Skorek (1976), Julio Velasco (1986, 1987, 1988, 1989), Daniele Bagnoli (1995, 1997 together with Franco Bertoli) and Angelo Lorenzetti (2002 and 2016). This is Lorenzetti’s sixth participation in the playoffs and sixth final.
This is the 11th times in history that the regular season runner-up wins the title: Santal Parma (81/82, 82/83), Maxicono Parma (89/90), Mapier Bologna (84/85), Modena (86/87, 88/89, 14/15), Sisley Treviso (97/98, 00/01), Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo (09/10), Lube Banca Marche Macerata (11/12).
In the latest game, Modena showed incredible character to hold off Perugia’s come-backs, even when the visitors seemed to have the control of the game, like in the lightning quick fifth set. Earvn Ngapeth was everywhere on court, he registered a huge 29 points, 3 aces, 2 blocks and was named MVP of the game.
While Matteo Piano, who had been stopped by a back operation, was on the bench with the team for the occasion, in the crowd there was a banner with “We are history” written on it, which President Catia Padrini applauded.
The tie-break had begun with two mistakes from Modena and a block from Perugia that had the visitors 3-0 up. The pressure was huge and Ngapeth sent one out (0-4). When the two teams changed sides, Perugia was dominating 8-3 with an outstanding Atanasijevic. Modena proved patient, though, and Perugia made its own mistakes. Then an ace from Petric made it 9-9 and the PalaPanini went crazy. The Serbian outside hitter was the last one to surrender, he fired in a spike to get within 13-12 and then 14-13 but it is his own serve stuck on the net that sealed the encounter.
Angelo Lorenzetti (coach DHL Modena): “It’s been an amazing victory, this goes to my parents who were here in the PalaPanini arena today, and to my sister, who was watching us from above. The boys have been tremendous, we won against a great Perugia team, they never gave up and they made it hard for us. The team handled the tough moments brilliantly. Winning here in Modena is special, it’s been an unforgettable evening”.
Slobodan Kovac (coach Sir Safety Conad Perugia): “I can only congratulate my players and congratulate Modena, who played at a very high level throughout this final series. I can’t blame my players for anything, they gave everything they had, they played top volleyball but it was not enough. I want to thank our fans, they’ve been amazing, big thank you to them, they really could not have supported us any better”.
DHL MODENA (2nd in Regular season). 32nd Participation, 12th title.
Modena’s first of six consecutive finals was in 1985, when they were beaten by Bologna on the best of three games. But they took revenge on Bologna the following season (3-0). Three more title followed in the next three years, always at the expense of Parma. The latter finally took revenge in 1990. Five years later they won it against Treviso, a match-up that would repeat itself in 1997 (Modena victory), 1999 (Treviso), 2002 (Modena) and 2003 (Treviso). They’d make another appearance in the final in 2015 against Trento but would be defeated in four games.
Funnily enough the last league title of 2002 had also been conquered on May 8. Coach Lorenzetti had lined-up Andrea Gardini, the late Vigor Bovolenta in the middle, US setter Lloy Ball, Russian Iakovlev as outside hitter, Andrea Giani on the wing with Luca Cantagallo, while the libero was Damiano Pippi. The giant Russian middle blocker Alexei Kazakov would often come on, while the other spiker was the Dutch Gortzen. At the end of a year punctuated by a long series of injuries, the team eventually had the better of Treviso by winning the tie-break 20-18 of game 4 and avoid Game 5 in Treviso’s PalaVerde.
The city of Modena won a total of 23 league titles out of 71. Twelve were won by the current club, and 11 by the Avia Pervia, (5), Minelli (3) and Villa D’Oro (3).

Vibo Valentia failed to convert its first match point to celebrate promotion into the SuperLega. Mastrangelo’s men were defeated at home against a Sora team that played without any fear and with great competitive spirit. The visitors dominated on a 3-0 score as they played a superb encounter. The hosts never looked like being able to compete. They had no choice, and Fabroni and co hit their serves hard from the get-go and they did a great job in the block-dig area. Mariano, Rosso and Giglioli proved just unstoppable for the hosts who also had to deal with Fabroni, who had the night of his life distributing the game at will. Head coach Fabio Soli was missing as he went on duty with the Italian’s women national team. His assistant Maurizio Colucci took over.
