The Italian Volleyball League supports Rare Disease Day
The Italian Volleyball League and its clubs will take the field from Saturday 27 February to Tuesday 1 March to celebrate the 9th anniversary of “Rare Disease Day”, which is commemorated worldwide on the last day of February. The commitment of the Lega in this particular awareness campaign is renewed for the 8th consecutive season, as it has become an important social participation event for the volleyball fans.
Cystic fibrosis, epidermolysis bullosa, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, infantile spinal muscular atrophy, Startgardt disease, Pompe disease are just some of the names of more than 6,000 rare diseases. It is estimated that between 670.000 and a million people are affected by one of those rare diseases. 80 per cent of those diseases are genetic in origin, they are often chronic and potentially lethal. A disease is defined ‘rare’ when it affects less than 5 people every 10.000.
The campaign aims at raising awareness internationally on rare diseases and their impact on the people affected in our society. The SuperLega and Serie A2 will take part with a message read from the speakers of each club before the game. It will also be possible to pick up info brochures and gadgets dedicated to the event thanks to the participation of volunteers inside the arenas.
