SuperLega UnipolSai Results:
Exprivia Molfetta-Calzedonia Verona 2-3 (22-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 14-16); DHL Modena-Revivre Milano 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-12); LPR Piacenza-Tonazzo Padova 1-3 (25-17, 23-25, 15-25, 23-25); Cucine Lube Banca Marche Civitanova-Ninfa Latina 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-11); Sir Safety Conad Perugia-Diatec Trentino 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 27-25, 25-13); Gi Group Monza-CMC Romagna 1-3 (26-28, 23-25, 25-22, 19-25)
SIR SAFETY CONAD PERUGIA – DIATEC TRENTINO 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 27-25, 25-13) SIR SAFETY CONAD PERUGIA: Buti 3, Fromm 12, De Cecco 4, Kaliberda 11, Giovi (L), Dimitrov, Tzioumakas, Atanasijevic 33, Fanuli, Birarelli 11. DNP Holt, Russell, Elia. Coach. Castellani.
DIATEC TRENTINO: Antonov 5, Bratoev, De Angelis, Giannelli 5, Lanza 15, Solé 10, Djuric 21, Colaci (L), Van De Voorde 7, Mazzone. DNP Nelli, Mazzone. Coach. Stoytchev.
Perugia put on its giant killer cap and gave its 3300 fans a special evening of volleyball. Castellani’s men defeated the Italian champs on a 3-1 score. The Perugia squad had nothing to do with the one that lost the opening game against Verona two weeks ago. The team dig was exceptional not only thanks to the specialist Giovi and Kaliberda but also with De Cecco, Birarelli and Fromm. In the meantime, MVP Atanasijevic took care of business in attack with 33 points.
Simone Buti (Sir Safety Conad Perugia): “We wanted to bounce back from our poor league debut and we needed a performance with character like this one. This was a sensational game, we gave everything we had and we got the result we wanted. We won that third set and then we stayed focused in the fourth until the very last point”.
Simone Giannelli (Diatec Trentino): “That was a bad game, at the start it was tight, but them we let it slip away, especially in the third set. And in the fourth we did not manage to fight back. This is a disappointing defeat, but this will surely help us work in the next few days”.
DHL MODENA – REVIVRE MILANO 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-12) – DHL MODENA: Mossa De Rezende 3, Donadio, Petric 14, Rossini (L), Sartoretti, Nikic 9, Piano 5, Bossi 1, Saatkamp 8, Vettori 18. DNP Soli, Casadei, Sighinolfi. Coach. Lorenzetti.
REVIVRE MILANO: Milushev 7, Alletti 6, Sbertoli 3, Russomanno Dos Santos 4, Tosi (L), Baranek 9, Burgsthaler 4, Marretta. DNP Gavenda, Sottile, De Togni, Rivan, Galaverna. Coach. Monti.
Three days after its Champions League win over Ljubljana, Modena brushed aside Milan in straight sets. Petric was named MVP of this one-way traffic affair.
Angelo Lorenzetti (coach DHLModena): “We had a good game against a team that is obviously struggling because of all its injuries. This year, we’ll have very little time to train, so the games become twice as important, because we have to win and train at the same time. Next is Monza, a good team we cannot underestimate”.
Danail Milushev (Revivre Milano): “Modena is an incredibly strong team, they want to win the league. I have been out for a month, this was my game back and it was extremely difficult. But the important thing is that I feel physically good. I think we gave it our best shot. As you know, we welcomed a new player this week, Kamil (Baranek), and I had been out a month, so it’s normal to face some difficulty. I hope we’ll be able to play even better next week, because a win would really be important for us”.
LPR PIACENZA – TONAZZO PADOVA 1-3 (25-17, 23-25, 15-25, 23-25) – LPR PIACENZA: Manià (L), Coscione, Kohut 10, Ter Horst 2, Perrin 11, Papi, Sedlacek, Patriarca 7, Zlatanov 13, Luburic 17, Tencati, Tavares Rodrigues 1. Coach. Giuliani.
TONAZZO PADOVA: Leoni, Orduna 2, Giannotti 19, Balaso (L), Quiroga 16, Volpato 1, Averill 10, Berger 14, Milan 1, Diamantini 5. DNP Cook, Bassanello, Lazzaretto. Coach. Baldovin.
Piacenza stumbled at home against Padova who took all three points. The hosts had dominated the opening set but Padova stepped up a gear and played with consistency. Giannotti had a terrific game and took the MVP award. Piacenza made too many mistakes in attack and dig and that cost the hosts dear in spite of an excellent performance from Luburic (17 points).
Valerio Baldovin (allenatore Tonazzo Padova): “We found it hard in the first set, we made too many silly mistakes. The second set was better, we gained confidence and put pressure on our opponents. We became more consistent and took three points that will do us a lot of good”.
Stefano Patriarca (LPR Piacenza): “We set ourselves some targets at the start of the season, we really didn’t need this defeat. In the first half of season, we’ll face our direct rivals at home and this game was one of those in which we needed to take three points. But not everything was bad and we’ll try to bounce back on Wednesday. Trento is obviously a tough opposition, but a win would make up for today’s defeat”.
CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE CIVITANOVA – NINFA LATINA 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-11) – CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE CIVITANOVA: Fei 13, Gabriele 2, Parodi 4, Juantorena 28, Stankovic 5, Sabbi 10, Christenson 6, Cester, Grebennikov (L), Corvetta, Podrascanin 17. DNP Vitelli. Coach. Blengini.
NINFA LATINA: Krumins, Mattei, Sket 4, Pavlov 10, Romiti (L), Boninfante 3, Tailli 7, Hirsch 17, Yosifov 10, Rossi 10, Maruotti 10. DNP Ferenciac. Coach. Placì.
Third victory in seven days for Civitanova, who had the better of Latina at the tie-break in the SuperLega third round. This means Blengini’s men remain unbeaten in four games, three in the league and one in the Champions League against Roeselare. In the fifth set, Civitanova took a 12-10 lead on a Boninfante mishandle. Then aces from Christenson and Juantorena (28 points) sealed the encounter.
Gianlorenzo Blengini (coach Cucine Lube Banca Marche Civitanova): “We definitely need to improve the quality of certain things. It’s true we’re facing an unusual situation but this is no excuse. We lost the second and third set because we failed to convert on the counter. Besides, our serve has not been as effective as usual. Then, we got inspiration from the bench. The group managed to resist when they were coming back both in the fourth and fifth set”.
Camillo Placì (coach Ninfa Latina): “That was a good game, extremely intense, with extremely entertaining rallies. I think the fans had a good time. I have to admit that during the game, given how it was going, I started to think we could win it. But then their quality prevailed and we could not complete the breakthrough. But thanks to this performance we can look ahead with confidence”.
EXPRIVIA MOLFETTA – CALZEDONIA VERONA 2-3 (22-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 14-16) – EXPRIVIA MOLFETTA: Candellaro 11, Randazzo 12, Mariella, Del Vecchio, De Barros Ferreira 17, Barone 8, De Pandis (L), Hierrezuelo 10, Fedrizzi 2, Hernandez Ramos 16. DNP Spadavecchia, Porcelli. Coach. Gulinelli.
CALZEDONIA VERONA: Zingel 12, Kovacevic 23, Pesaresi (L), Gitto 1, Lecat, Spirito 1, Frigo (L), Baranowicz 2, Starovic 15, Bellei, Sander 19, Anzani 6. DNP Bucko. Coach. Giani.
In front of a big crowd, It’s Verona who snatched it in the tie-break. This was a thrilling battle in which Verona’s top guns put all their talent on display. Molfetta worked hard from start to finish and made it very hard for one of the top teams of this league. Verona had 13 blocks (5 for Anzani) while Molfetta tallied 9 aces (5 for Hernandez). Kovacevic shined with 73% and 26 points, and was named MVP. In the decisive fifth set, Gitto’s block on Randazzo made it 11-12, but Hierrezuelo tied it at 14. The game was eventually settled on an Anzani block on Joao Rafael (14-16).
Andrea Giani (coach Calzedonia Verona): “We knew we needed a top performance today, it’s been a roller coaster of emotion. Molfetta had the advantage of having trained all summer together, we needed to be tough to win this one and we have. That really was a great game, we have a super group of players. . We’ll face another tricky game on Wednesday, we have to rest as well as we can after those five intense sets”.
Luigi Randazzo (Exprivia Molfetta): “I think we lost a point today because we could have taken two points. We played well, at times better than Verona. We have to be more clinical to win those kind of games”.
GI GROUP MONZA – CMC ROMAGNA 1-3 (26-28, 23-25, 25-22, 19-25) – GI GROUP MONZA: Galliani 20, Jovovic 2, Rizzo (L), Botto 3, Verhees 11, Beretta 8, Zanatta Buiatti 21, Rousseaux 3. DNP Copelli, Sala, Daldello, Mercorio, Brunetti, Gao. Coach. Vacondio.
CMC ROMAGNA: Mengozzi 9, Cavanna 3, Della Lunga, Van Garderen 15, Polo 6, Koumentakis 19, Torres 16, Boswinkel, Bari (L). DNP Ortali, Ricci, Zappoli, Goi, Perini De Aviz. Coach. Kantor.
In the third round and its second game at home, Monza could not register its first win of the season. Monza created brilliantly, especially at the start of the game, but it could not keep it up at the end of the sets, which allowed the guests to come-back and win the first, second and fourth set.
MVP: Maurice Torres
Nikola Jovovic (Gi Group Team Monza): “It’s disappointing because we really wanted this first win at home against CMC Romagna which is one of our direct rivals for the playoffs. What went wrong? We did not manage to hang on to our lead with composure. We made mistakes in attack and on the serve and made their come-back easier. We’re sorry but there is no time to think too much about what we got wrong. On Wednesday, we’ll host Modena and we need to immediately find the motivation and determination to play a good game”.
Maurice Torres (CMC Romagna): “This was such an important game, both psychologically and for the points at stake. It was not easy by any means to come here and beat Monza after our poor performance in Molfetta last week. We did a great job of working hard all the way through, even when we were behind on the score board, and we ripped the reward, especially at the end of sets. I think we can really be satisfied with the volleyball we played today”.
