2015 CEV Cup: Trento beaten in the golden set

DINAMO MOSCOW – ENERGY T.I. DIATEC TRENTINO 1-3 (27-25, 19-25, 17-25, 24-26; GOLDEN SET 15-12) – DINAMO MOSCOW : Obmochaev (L), Pankov 1, Grankin, Ermakov (L), Zaytsev 2, Biryukov 23, Berezhko 5, Markin 12, Philippov 1, Holt 6, Shcherbinin 5, Kruglov 25. Coach. Marichev.

ENERGY T.I. DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 18, Nelli, Birarelli 13, Zygadlo, Nemec 12, Giannelli, Lanza 21, Solé 11, Mazzone, Colaci (L), Fedrizzi 1. DNP Burgsthaler. Coach. Stoytchev.

A superb tenacious Trento side played the perfect game only to see its dream of CEV Cup glory vanish in a golden set it had so brilliantly earned with character and fighting spirit. Severely defeated in the first leg in Italy, Stoytchev’s men went very close from completing an epic come-back in the Russian capital. But now remains the disappointment of a European cup final lost.

The Italians built their fight back on some superb work at the net, Birarelli registering an amazing 9 blocks out of the 19 from his team. The dig was excellent too and that led to many break points. But in the most difficult moment, Moscow found some of his old self and won the golden set. MVP: Kruglov.

“We were very close but maybe at the same time very far – said coach Stoytchev – The stats say we dominated the game but all this wasn’t enough in the clutch time of the game when their experience made the difference. We’re a new and young team, we’re not used yet to certain level of competition. We’re extremely disappointed, we believed in our chance till the end. The players proved they believed as much as I did when I said it was not over when we were beaten 3-1 in Trento. We did a great job of doing what we had planned until the fourth set. I am happy with what we have tactically done until the golden set, then we lost our composure, and their run at the start of the deciding set made the difference”.

Verona wins quarter-finals game 1 in Perugia

SIR SAFETY PERUGIA – CALZEDONIA VERONA 2-3 (18-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-21, 12-15)

SIR SAFETY PERUGIA: Buti 8, Fromm 9, Paolucci, De Cecco 4, Giovi (L), Barone 2, Tzioumakas, Beretta 6, Vujevic 7, Atanasijevic 27, Fanuli (L), Sunder 6. DNP Maruotti. Coach. Grbic.

CALZEDONIA VERONA: Zingel 6, Coscione 2, Pesaresi (L), Gasparini 22, Deroo 19, White 1, Bellei, Sander 19, Anzani 7. DNP Gitto, Blasi, Centomo, Borgogno. Coach. Giani.

Verona came away from Perugia with the victory in the opening game of the quarter-final series and made a giant step towards qualification in the semi-finals. This was one of those days for Perugia, who made an incredible amount of mistakes (31) and had various players not performing at their best. Verona was inspired by the MVP Gasparini (22 points) and by the spikers Sander and Deroo (19 each). As for Perugia, it was led by the usual Atanasijevic, who received the March MVP award as well as the Gazzetta trophy 2015 before the game. He scored 27 but was the only one in double figures. Perugia did find the energy to come-back from 2-1 down to force a tie-break but Gasparini’s run of serves destroyed all hopes of the home side. Game 2 on Sunday in Verona.

Goran Vujevic (Sir Safety Perugia): “Verona played better than us, they hit the serve hard and made it difficult for us. We got back in it in the fourth set, but then we couldn’t close the gap in the fifth. We lacked consistency and conceded a lot of break points. And when you trail on the scoreboard you tend to lose your composure and become insecure”.

Andrea Giani (coach Calzedonia Verona): “It’s not been the greatest of game, the typical playoffs game that is never over until the last point. But we’ve done a great job, especially in the block-dig area. We’ve made one step forward, nothing more. Each game has its own story and we have another one to play”.
