Trentino won the Challenge Cup first leg against Roeselare, a real battle that lasted over two hours. That was also a good way to bounce back from the league defeat conceded against Treia. Still, in order to go through to the next round, Stoytchev’s men will need another victory on any score. Roeselare did a great job never to give up, even when they were down like in the third set (13-16) and fourth set (7-12). But in the end, Kazyiski and co found their touch again in the fifth set to take the edge in the contest. Lanza finished top scorer with 22 points, Kaziyski added 16 with 53% at the net, while Birarelli and Solé had three blocks apiece. On the other side of the net Tuerlinckx shined with 27 points (4 blocks).
Radostin Stoytchev (coach Energy T.I. Diatec Trentino): “We should and could have sealed it a lot before the tie-break but at 16-13 in the third we failed to convert a big opportunity to seal it 3-0. This remain an important victory against a strong team, they play excellent volleyball and can make it tough for you with their jump float serve. We can’t say we’re the favourite to go through because we’ll play away from home but we’ll remain confident and ready to fight. I decided to line-up Giannelli from the start because he’s been doing very well, he deserved that chance. Besides, Roeselare did not know him. The experiment worked fine until a certain point. He has a great basis to work on considering how young he is, but he still has a lot to learn”.
