Verona took revenge on the first meeting lost against Latina in a game that turned into a marathon. And a spectacular one at that. Both sides wanted the win at all cost and that led to a surprisingly exciting encounter packed with twists and turns. The main turning point came in the fourth set when Verona cancelled 6 match points to eventually snatch it 38-36.
The tie-break began with a Sander spike and a mistake from Rauwerdink (0-2), the game was tied at 6 all on a Starovic counter, and it was level again at 9 when Bellei injured his ankle. White came on, then two blocks from Zingel and Deroo sent Verona on their way to a 15-11 win.
This game was the fourth longest in history (with sets to 25): 2 hours and 31 minutes. The longest in history was played in the 2010-11 season between Città di Castello and Padova, it lasted 2 hours and 43 minutes.
Andrea Giani (coach Calzedonia Verona): “We have been patient, especially in the fourth set, then we found our game and managed to stay composed. This game goes to show we have made progress since the start of the season, we are now at a different level. But both teams are having a good season”.
Daniele Sottile (Top Volley Latina): “I don’t even know if it’s credit to them or if we let that one slip away from our grasp. We had so many opportunities in the fourth set to seal the game and take all the points”.
