Trentino got of to a good start in its CEV Cup campaign by defeating Novi Sad 3-1 in the 16th of finals first leg. The Italians will now need to take two sets to go through when they meet again at home. It’s not been easy for Stoytchev’s men, especially in the middle of the game, but they managed to overcome the difficulties. They played better and better as the game wore on, with 49% in attack and 14 blocks (6 for Birarelli). Key moment in the third set when the team managed to come back from 24-22 down to win it 26-24 with Nemec and Birarelli scoring clutch points. Lanza finished top scorer with 21 points, while Kaziyski missed only one serve out of 18, scoring two aces.
Radostin Stoytchev (coach Energy T.I. Diatec Trentino): “A lot of different factors made it a tricky game but we did a great job to get this valuable win. We had a tough start and lost the first set, but then we won the third with a miraculous come-back launched by Nemec’s serves. From then on, it’s all been easier. I am satisfied with the 3-1 score and I liked the pride we showed in our reaction and how strong we looked mentally in the middle of the game. We need time to work in the gym to get better, we had not been able to train much this week”.
