Serie A1: round 17

Change of schedule: round 20 will be played on Wednesday February 19 to be in line with the International calendar.

Serie A1 results:

CMC Ravenna-Altotevere Città di Castello 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 18-25, 25-23); Diatec Trentino-Casa Modena 0-3 (25-27, 19-25, 22-25); Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata-Tonno Callipo Calabria Vibo Valentia 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22); Bre Lannutti Cuneo-Copra Elior Piacenza 2-3 (28-30, 29-27, 25-22, 23-25, 10-15); Andreoli Latina-Calzedonia Verona 2-3 (17-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 9-15); Sir Safety Perugia-Exprivia Molfetta 3-1 (25-12, 25-20, 29-31, 32-30)

BRE LANNUTTI CUNEO – COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA 2-3 (28-30, 29-27, 25-22, 23-25, 10-15) – BRE LANNUTTI CUNEO: Rauwerdink 2, Antonov 20, Marchisio (L), Gonzalez 2, De Pandis (L), Casadei 10, Kohut 17, Alletti, De Togni 8, Coscione, Rouzier 5, Maruotti 18. Coach. Piazza.

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA: Marra (L), Le Roux, Papi 11, Fei 11, Smerilli (L), Kaliberda 4, Simon 11, Zlatanov 22, Tencati, Vettori 33, De Cecco 4. DNP Partenio, Husaj. Coach. Monti.

Hristo Zlatanov was named MVP as he led Piacenza to a tie-break win in Cuneo after Trailing 2-1.

Andrea Marchisio (Bre Lannutti Cuneo): “A point taken but two points lost too. With a little more focus we could have done better. But if we look on the positive side, we proved we could give a game to anyone, because pushing the second of the league to the tie-break is an excellent result. We’ll play Macerata on Wednesday, another opportunity to show what we can do”.

Robertlandy Simon (Copra Elior Piacenza): “We knew it was going to be a difficult game after our trip to Russia. It was tough, especially after the elimination from the Champions League. Now we have to recharge our batteries”.

SIR SAFETY PERUGIA – EXPRIVIA MOLFETTA 3-1 (25-12, 25-20, 29-31, 32-30)

SIR SAFETY PERUGIA: Buti 7, Paolucci, Petric 15, Giovi (L), Cupkovic 7, Barone 10, Della Lunga, Mitic, Vujevic 5, Atanasijevic 30, Semenzato 10. DNP Della Corte, Fanuli. Coach. Kovac.

EXPRIVIA MOLFETTA: Mazzone 7, Izzo, Del Vecchio 1, Cesarini (L), Sabbi 24, Zanuto 12, Fornés Jul 8, Casoli 7, Saitta. DNP Piscopo, Diamantini, Porcelli. Coach. Cichello.

Thanks to Trento’s loss and its 3-1 win over Molfetta, Perugia moves up to third in the table. But it’s not been easy by any means for Kovac’s boys. While they were splendid in the first set, they let a 24-20 lead slip away in the third as Molfetta turned things around thanks to some excellent blocking (6 in the set). And the hosts were behind all fourth set before Buti, Petric and especially the MVP Atanasijevic showed the way back to snatch it 32-30.

Slobodan Kovac (coach Sir Safety Perugia): “After a first set that was really perfect, especially on break points, the team lost in intensity. We conceded three blocks at 24-21 in the third, and we honestly ran the risk of losing because Molfetta made it real hard for us. We have not played a good game, we have to remember that the Italian league is tough, the league table does not matter, you always have to give everything, point after point. These are three good points, but that was too much of a struggle”.

Cristian Casoli (Exprivia Molfetta): “We gave it a good fight and gave them food for thoughts. Shame we lost the fourth set, with a couple of mistakes less, we could have won it. But the important thing was to play well and react after the tough patch we had”.

CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA – TONNO CALLIPO CALABRIA VIBO VALENTIA 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) – CUCINE LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Henno (L), Parodi 9, Zaytsev 20, Stankovic 6, Kovar 10, Kurek, Baranowicz 2, Podrascanin 5. DNP Patriarca, Martino, Monopoli, Giombini. Coach. Giuliani.

TONNO CALLIPO CALABRIA VIBO VALENTIA: Trinidad De Haro, Plot, Steuerwald 3, Randazzo 8, Farina (L), Forni 5, Crer 3, Gavotto 11, Ogurcak 14, Presta. DNP Thiaw, Villena, Sardanelli. Coach. Blengini.

Macerata’s PalaFontescodella arena remains a fortress. The leaders swept Vibo Valentia and made it 14 consecutive home wins, including the Champions League and Italian Cup games. Thanks to this win, they also extend their lead at the top of the table on Piacenza, who has a game in hand. Zaytsev scored 20 points with 83% in attack and was named MVP.

Michele Baranowicz (Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “We did an excellent job, especially at the start of the game. We did well at the end of sets with good serves and an effective block-dig department. We had worked on those things a lot during the week. Vibo has definitely played better than in the first meeting. We played as a team today, united in the difficult moments. Now we face a tough trip to Cuneo on Wednesday, and the game that will follow in Modena will be as difficult. Let’s think one game at a time, give our best and work well in the gym”.

Patrick Steuerwald (Tonno Callipo Calabria Vibo Valentia): “We were very close to win at least a set, but in the clutch time the experience and the class of our opponent made the difference. If we had converted a couple of extra points, we could have got a little something out of this game. We’ll remain focused because we have an important game coming on Wednesday against Città di Castello, a game in which we can have more of a say. But I have seen progress compared to last week’s game against Modena”.

DIATEC TRENTINO – CASA MODENA 0-3 (25-27, 19-25, 22-25)

DIATEC TRENTINO: Sintini, Solé 10, Ferreira 11, Suxho 1, De Paola, Lanza 8, Colaci (L), Nelli 7, Burgsthaler 6. DNP Birarelli, Thei, Fedrizzi, Polo. Coach. Serniotti.

CASA MODENA: Manià (L), Donadio (L), Sala 12, Sket 10, Deroo 5, Bartman 2, Beretta 4, Bossi, Mossa De Rezende 5, Kovacevic 1, Ngapeth 17. DNP Kampa, Hendriks. Coach. Lorenzetti.

Modena stopped its losing streak in the derby of the highway 22 but extended Trento’s poor run. Modena had not won in a months and they had not won in Trento in seven years (March 2007). They took advantage of Trento’s many injuries (Sokolov, Szabò and Birarelli) while Bruninho and Ngapeth already seem to find each other well on court. The new signing has indeed been key with 17 points, 64% which earned him the MVP title.

Filippo Lanza (Diatec Trentino): “We tried to fight hard but at the end of the day we lacked understanding on court because of the players missing. Shame because in the first set, we had got off to a superb start. Losing that set really hurt us. We tried to get back up on our feet but we had far too many problems to make it today”.

Angelo Lorenzetti (coach Casa Modena): “Trento did their best with what they had. It’s not easy to play when you make that many changes. We did well to take advantage and get back to winning. I really like the way we came back in the first set, which proves that this team still has heart and character. Ngapeth is a great player, I had no doubt he would have settled in the team just fine”.

ANDREOLI LATINA – CALZEDONIA VERONA 2-3 (17-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 9-15) – ANDREOLI LATINA: Rossini (L), Gitto 10, Sottile 2, Skrimov 5, Verhees 8, Tailli, Paris, Noda Blanco 7, Starovic 28, Fragkos 7. DNP Candellaro, Michalovic. Coach. Simoni.

CALZEDONIA VERONA: Zingel 10, Blasi, Pesaresi (L), Ter Horst 13, Gasparini 28, White 15, Boninfante 3, Bellei 1, Anzani 12, Gonzalez. DNP Coali, Centomo. Coach. Giani.

After two hours of play, Latina and Verona divided the points. The guests took the first two sets but had to play a tie-break to eventually take two points. The match-up between spikers was won by the MVP starovic who scored 28 points, one more than Gasparini. But Verona dominated at the net converting 15 blocks (8 only for Latina).

Andrea Giani (Coach Calzedonia Verona): “We threw away two points. We got off to a good start but then we made mistakes and let them back in it. Same story as against Ravenna last Sunday. We’re improving, we do have potential, but we have to find new alternatives every time. We have to keep working on this in the gym”.

Dario Simoni (Coach Andreoli Latina): “We played two sets at a very high level, this is what we have to take from this game and build on this. We knew how good they were at blocking. I am angry because I wanted to win, but this will give me even more motivation to work hard in training”.

CMC RAVENNA – ALTOTEVERE CITTà DI CASTELLO 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 18-25, 25-23)

CMC RAVENNA: Mengozzi 9, Kauliakamoa Jr, Cricca, Toniutti 4, Tillie 7, Koumentakis 7, Patriarca, Klapwijk 19, Cester 8, Bari (L), Cebulj 16. DNP Jeliazkov, Scarpi. Coach. Bonitta.

ALTOTEVERE CITTà DI CASTELLO: Franceschini, Fromm 12, Carminati, Corvetta, Dolfo 3, Massari 9, Tosi (L), Piano 10, Van Walle 16, Rossi 10. DNP Lensi, Sartoretti, Marchiani. Coach. Radici.

Ravenna made it three wins in a row against Città di Castello in a packed arena. The hosts played with great intensity, while it was led by an inspired Toniuti, who was named MVP.

Marco Bonitta (Coach CMC Ravenna): “We have eventually won a home game. The atmosphere was great and the fans went home happy. We played extremely well for two sets, then Città di Castello got back in it but we maintained our focus in the fourth, without dwelling on the mistakes made and looking ahead instead. I am definitely satisfied”.

Antonio Corvetta (Altotevere Città di Castello): “Congratulations to Ravenna who had a good game. We did not manage to play as well as in our recent outings”.
