Russia remains a forbidden land for Trentino, which had already lost its two previous encounters played in this nation (both played in Moscow in 2010 and 2013). This time, the Italians were defeated by Belgorod in the playoffs 6 first leg in straight sets. The Russians proved they were legitimately described as favourite, not only of the tie but of the whole competition. In order to qualify for the final four in Ankara, Trento will have to win 3-0 or 3-1 and then win the golden set. Today, without its outside hitter Sokolov, the breakthrough proved impossible.

Roberto Serniotti (Coach Trentino Diatec): “Belgorod is a top class team but not impossible to beat. Tonight we did not manage to effectively contain them. It’s true they played well but we also made it easier for them, we have never served with consistency. On break points, we failed to make the most of opportunities that came our way and could have got us back in it. It’s a shame but we do have positive elements to make us hope in a different game in eight days. We’ll definitely need a different performance at home, both at the net and on the serve. Let’s try”.
