Trentino began its fifth participation in the playoffs 12 with a 3-1 road victory over Maaeik. The Italian Champions will qualify to the next round if they win by any score or lose at the tie-break. Pushed by 2100 fans, the hosts hoped to make the upset when they took the first set, while Trento made a lot of mistakes on the serve and did not look focused in dig. But the Italians woke up in the second set and their attack made the difference: very effective without many mistakes (53% overall). Solé registered 69% in attack and had 4 of the 9 Trento blocks.
Roberto Serniotti (coach Trentino Diatec): “It took us some time to find a way to stop Maaseik, which played at an excellent level until the second set. Little by little we became more efficient at the net and in dig, and we imposed our game. We’re still inconsistent but we do a good job of resolving the problems that come up. Sokolov was among the most positives ones tonight, Ferreira had a good game on his return, even if Fedrizzi had perfectly done his job. We’re not through yet because Maaseik will come to play, we’d better not underestimate the task we’ll face. Today’s game, like last Wednesday’s against Verona, prove that there aren’t many weak teams around. If we want to win, we have to play at our best all the time, and that’s what we’ll try to do”.
