European Cups

Positive second round for Macerata, Trento and Cuneo.

Tie-break loss for Piacenza in France.

Challenge cup begins next week for Latina

2014 DenizBank Champions League

In the second round of the Champions League, Trentino and Macerata took the top spot of their respective group thanks to a second victory in as many games. In Trento, Serniotti’s boys added to the opening win over Berlin with a 3-0 over the Swiss side of Lugano. The Germans are second of the group three points behind. In Pool E, Macerata has a three-point advantage on the Russian giants Kazan and Novosibirsk. The Italians easily got rid of Aich/Dob away from home.

Bitter return home for Piacenza, however. Home winners against Ljubljana the previous week, the Italians came back from Tours, France, with just a point as they were beaten at the tie-break. The French are now top of the group but just one point ahead of Piacenza.

2014 CEV Cup

No trouble for Cuneo to overcome the first barrier in the Cev Cup. They knocked out Nantes with two wins, 3-1 in the first leg and 3-0 in the return leg.

2014 Challenge Cup

Latina to make its debut

Latina will make its debut into the Challenge Cup on Wednesday. The Italians will take on the Slovakian side of Chemes Humenne. This will be the second participation for Santilli’s boys in Europe following last year’s superb run in the Cev Cup (final lost against Halkbank Ankara). They are able to take part in the Challenge Cup as both Modena and Perugia gave up on their rights to do so.
