World Club Championships 2013
Trentino’s journey into its fifth World Club Championships in Brazil began brightly with a 3-1 victory over the Iranian team of Kalleh. The holders were tactically and technically the better side as they took three important points in the hope to qualify for the semi-finals. Kalleh never gave up, like in the first sets when they came back from 16-11 down to win it 26-24 but Trento did well not to get discouraged and keep calm. The Italians dominated at the net, registering 17 blocks with 5 for Lanza alone. Birarelli shined with 4 blocks and 70% in attack while Sokolov (22 points) and Suxho were at their usual high standards. The next game will be against the Argentinians of UPCN on Thursday at 7pm Italian time.
“It’s been a tougher game compared to the Super Cup played against Macerata last Wednesday – said coach Roberto Serniotti – We got off to a good start then made it hard for ourselves by feeding the opponents. But we did well to stay calm, and I include the difficult end of fourth set. There’s always going to be very tricky encounters in the World Club Championships, so we’re happy with that win”.
