The winner of the 22nd edition of the Junior League – Massimo Serenelli Trophy – is Macerata. In the league dedicated to the Under 20, they defeated Trento at the tie-break. This is a special double of cups this season for Macerata as the Under 14 had won the Boy League on March 3 in Cesenatico. Overall, this is the 12th national title for Macerata’s youth academy, which triumphed in the Junior League already in 2000 and 2007.
The Game:
1st set – Spectacular start to the game. Initially tight (8-8), Trento escaped (11-17) and ran away with a comfortable first set win.
2° set – Macerata was back on court with a sense of revenge. It went 18-14 ahead but was pegged back (19-19), only to find another spurt, the decisive one, to tie the contest.
3° set – Macerata sprinted to a 4-0 lead then 8-3. Dig and counters were working just fine for Rosichini’s boys who kept a 5-6 points lead all the way.
4° set – Macerata looked keen to seal it all in the fourth (4-1 then 10-7) but Trento was not going to give up that easily (13-13). They managed to pull away at 15-18 and increased its advantage to 16-22 before hanging on to their lead despite a Macerata attempt to get back in it.
5° set – Macerata immediately took the tie-break in hand (5-1 then 7-2). Trento would not get any closer than 3 points as Macerata lifted another youth trophy aloft.
Meanwhile, in the morning Cuneo had taken the bronze at the expense of Vibo Valentia, swept 3-0.
