Trentino Volley in World Club Championships 2013

Trentino Volley will take part in the World Club Championships 2013. This time it will not take place in Qatar but in Brazil from October 15 to 20. As it announced the official venue, the FIVB also communicated that Trentino would get a wild card. The Italians will therefore be the only club to participate in all the editions since the competition made its return in the calendar.

Among the other teams, there will be the African Champions of Sfax (Tunisia), the European Champs of Novosibirsk (Russia), the Asian champs of Kalleh (Iran), while the name of the other four will be known in the next three months.

Trentino is all smile again as it regained the lead in the series (2-1). The world champions inflicted a 3-0 defeat to Piacenza, which will have to win on May 5 at home to bring the series to the deciding game 5.

The arena was packed with over 4.300 supporters who helped their team to a near-perfect performance in every single fundamental: 58% in attack (Djuric and Birarelli both at 80%), 8 blocks (4 for Kaziyski), and 9 aces for only 5 mistakes. Piacenza tried its best to stay close but never really managed to keep up. MVP: Juantorena.

Radostin Stoytchev (coach Itas Diatec Trentino): “We have done a particularly good job at staying focused throughout, being very effective in every fundamentals. Concentration was key to get this result but now we have to avoid getting carried away. This win is behind us, if we want to win the league we have to behave as if nothing had happened. It would be wrong to think we’ve done the hardest part of the job. It will be another battle in Piacenza, we’ll have to be ready to overcome the difficult moments. There wasn’t many of those tonight and we overcame them. Credit to us but also to our fans who have been amazing. Thanks to everyone”.

Luca Monti (coach Copra Elior Piacenza): “Trento has really been aggressive on the serve, we struggled to settle in the game with all the pressure they put on us. We probably deserve some critics but a lot of credit has to go to Trento too. What we have to do now is immediately erase this game from our minds and start over for game 4. We’ll have to be very aggressive in Piacenza and try to play our game, instead of being victims like today”.
