Trento is out of Europe at the first knock-out stage. The world champions did not manage to turn things around following their defeat in Russia last week. They did brilliantly beat Dinamo Moscow 3-0 in the game, but the Russians took the golden set to 15. This is the first time that Trentino will not be in the Final Four. Trentino had been very effective in attack with 64% and done well on the serve with 7 aces. MVP: Juantorena. But the Russians found their form in the golden set on the serve and at the net. Moscow went 7-3 up before the hosts got back within one (7-8). But Markin and co escaped again and won it.

Radostin Stoytchev (coach Trentino Diatec): “We knew that needing a golden set meant risking a lot. It’s a set that is decided with luck and Moscow proved luckier than us, but it has to be said that luck has to be forced, provoked, and we did not do that, we waited for our opponent’s mistakes, which did not come. Credit to Moscow, they’ve been more astute than we have. Until the golden set, we had had a very convincing performance in every area of the game, we had that look we had in the past three month. It was not enough and we have to accept it”.

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA – ASSECO RESOVIA RZESZOW 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18) LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Pajenk, Zaytsev 18, Parodi 14, Stankovic 11, Monopoli, Henno, Travica 1, Starovic 1, Kooy 9, Podrascanin 9. DNP De Moraes Lampariello , Tartaglione. Coach. Giuliani.

ASSECO RESOVIA RZESZOW : Lotman 3, Grzyb 3, Nowakowski 9, Tichacek 1, Kosok 5, Akhrem 16, Bartman 17, Kovacevic 10, Perlowski, Ignaczak (L). DNP Dobrowolski, Buszek. Coach. Kowal.

Macerata marches on to the playoffs 6 of the Champions League. Giuliani’s boys made the double over Reszow with a 3-1 victory in Italy. They will face Cuneo in an Italian derby in the next round. In front of yet another sold-out crowd, and 40 Polish fans, Travica and co dominated most of the game, only falling asleep at the end of the third set when the deal seemed done.

Alberto Giuliani (coach Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “We are happy to have qualified against a very strong team. We ran the risk of letting them back in it with what happened in the third set, but we’re very happy, the joy to be through is much bigger than the disappointment of conceding this 0-6 when we got asleep. In the first two sets, we have been composed, did not make many mistakes on the serve, and that’s something I’m really happy about for the future, because this means we’re making important progress on our game. Cuneo? We have to think first about the league and the game against Latina, which is a team that has been back at its best of late”.

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA – CVC GABROVO 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 29-27)

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA: Latelli (L), Corvetta 1, Papi 1, Ogurcak 6, Simon 7, Zlatanov 8, Tencati 7, Maruotti 4, Vettori 19, De Cecco 4. DNP Fei, Holt Maxwell. Coach. Monti.

CVC GABROVO: Petkov 11, Paliyski 3, Vlasev 5, Vuldzhev 6, Stefanov 12, Naydenov 1, Lekov 1, Kichukov, Bodurov, Mitev. DNP Yordanov, Minchev. Coach. Liubomir.

Six consecutive win in the Challenge Cup for Piacenza, and yet another 3-0 that sends them in the quarter-finals. Gabrov tried it all in the third set but in vain. There was too big a gap between the two clubs with Piacenza collecting 12 blocks (3 or Gabrov), and registering 59% in attack (45% for the Bulgarians). And Piacenza had sent the “B” team on.

Luca Monti (coach Copra Elior Piacenza): “I wanted to give some court time to everyone, it was useful too because we’ll have many games in quick succession. We did not get much indication from this game because of the level. The strongest team we have faced in this competition so far was Istanbul”.
