The first edition of the Monguzzi Cup went to Lugano, which had the better of the hosts Cantù. Lugano is a real multinational with strong individual players like middle blockers Lethonen (Finaland) and Simac (Canada), Serbian libero Rosic, the Brazilian Banderò and Argentine setter Garnica. The later was named MVP of the event. Still, this proved to be a good test for Cantù to prepare for the coming league opener against Brolo.
