In front of a 7800 crowd, Trentino defeated Macerata 3-1 and retained the title won last year. The beginning of the game seemed to be a carbon copy of last season’s V-Day, with Trento flying 2-0 up before the come-back of Macerata in the third. But this time, Stoytchev’s boys managed to stay close in the fourth and , at 23 all, they found the winning points through Djuric and a serve from Kaziyski that touched the net and became impossible to take for Macerata’s reception. Trento’s main weapons were Birarelli’s jump float serve (5 aces) and the spikes of Kaziyski and Juantorena. Stokr got injured at the start of the fourth set but substitute Uchikov did an excellent job. MVP: setter Raphael.
Andrea Bari (Itas Diatec Trentino): “We know they are as good as us and sometimes even stronger. Now we’re tied 2-2 in the finals, the challenge goes on. Uchikov did a great job when he came on for Stokr, but all the bench players work extremely hard during the week, they often deserve more credit than they get. I am really happy for Uchikov because he’s a great guy, and as you could see, ready to play as well”.
Raphael Vieira de Oliveira (Itas Diatec Trentino): “We started off very aggressive and we made it difficult for them with our serve and at the net. They changed their line-up in the third and we lost our way a bit, but then we got back in it”.
Emanuele Birarelli (Itas Diatec Trentino): “We played two perfect sets, then they got confidence with some substitutions in the third. And in the fourth I don’t even know what happened, we were in apnea, but we pulled together until the end without giving up”.
Matey Kaziyski (Itas Diatec Trentino): “We had to play as a great team to win this one, we never gave up, not even when Stokr got injured. And then we had a little bit of luck in the fourth, which is always nice to have on your side”.
Ivan Zaytsev (Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “In the first two sets, we haven’t seen the ball, they did not let us play, while in the third we played really well. We don’t like to lose, nobody does, that obviously hurt”.
Simone Parodi (Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “We’re disappointed, we had the game in hand and we lost it because of our own mistakes. They did a good job to adapt to our new line-up. We’re extremely disappointed not to have won that fourth set when we were 3-4 points up”.
