Serie A1

Round1. Vibo wins in Trento. Cuneo and Piacenza fine away from home. Victories on home soil for Latina and Modena.

CMC RAVENNA – COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA 0-3 (17-25, 19-25, 19-25)

CMC RAVENNA: Mengozzi 3, Zhukouski 1, Psarras, Sirri, Tabanelli (L), Mazzotti, Zanuto 10, Moro 11, Bellei 5, Pelekoudas 1, Creus Larry 4. Coach. Babini.

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA: Marra (L), Papi 9, Fei 17, Holt 8, Tencati 4, Maruotti 13, Vettori, De Cecco 4. DNP Tavana, Corvetta, Latelli, Ogurcak. Coach. Monti.

There was very little Ravenna could do on its debut against Piacenza, which proved too strong. Besides, the hosts not only lost Rooney but also Sirri, who only came on at the very end, and Radunovic. As for Piacenza, they could count on an outstanding De Cecco.

Bruno Zanuto (CMC Ravenna): “Beyond the fact we were missing players and that Piacenza is a top quality side, I think we will have to get better in various areas of the game”.

Luca Monti (coach Copra Elior Piacenza): “It’s never easy to start off the season away from home, but the boys had a good game and deservedly won. I am satisfied with the work at the net and in dig, while the serve has been sharp but inconsistent”.

ANDREOLI LATINA – SIR SAFETY PERUGIA 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-23)

ANDREOLI LATINA: Rauwerdink 13, Rossini (L), Gitto 11, Sottile 1, Jarosz 6, Verhees 9, Troy 4, Noda Blanco 5, Cisolla 4. DNP Patriarca, Prandi, Fragkos, Guemart. Coach Prandi.

SIR SAFETY PERUGIA: Alletti 4, Van Harskamp, Petric 10, Daldello 1, Giovi (L), Tomassetti 1, Schwarz 3, Tamburo 5, Vujevic 2, Edgar 3, Semenzato 7. DNP Van Rekom, Pochini. Coach. Kovac.

Latina took all three points by sweeping Perugia. While it dominated the first two sets, the third proved tougher. Trailing 8-12 in the third, the hosts played with patience, came back and Rawerdink eventually scored the winning points.

Daniele Sottile (Andreoli Latina): “You couldn’t have hoped for a better score but in terms of play there’s a lot of work to be done. We did well to come back in the third set in which we have fallen behind after a couple of nervous moments. Next is a tough away game in Verona”.

Goran Vujevic (Sir Safety Perugia): “Poor performance for us, the lack of experience showed. Credit to Latina for making the most of this situation and taking the opportunity we gave them. We’ll try to get better for the next game”.

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO – TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA 1-3 (25-18, 23-25, 23-25, 18-25)

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 10, Birarelli 14, Vieira De Oliveira 3, Uchikov 3, Lanza 8, Djuric 7, Colaci (L), Stokr 11, Chrtiansky Jr 2, Bari (L), Burgsthaler. DNP Sintini, Valsecchi. Coach. Stoytchev.

TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA: Coscione 2, Cortellazzi, Kaliberda 10, Lavia, Farina (L), Rocamora, Buti 10, Klapwijk 26, Barone 7, Urnaut 11. DNP Montesanti, Forni, Presta. Coach. Blengini.

Trentino’s season began with a much unexpected home loss against Vibo Valentia. This was Vibo’s first ever victory in Trento in the club history. Trentino will now fly to Doha for the World Club Championships and will have to wait for another three weeks before being able to register its first points of the season (away in San Giustino).

MVP:Klaplwijk (26 points with 4 aces, 2 blocks and 61% at the net)

Matey Kaziyski (Itas Diatec Trentino): “A difficult debut game, we got off to a good start, but we faded and let them back in it. Vibo put us under pressure, especially with the serve, and we struggled. The World Club championships has nothing to do with it: we just played poorly tonight”.

Simone Buti (Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “Winning in Trentino is just an amazing result, especially when you consider all the defeats suffered there in hardly an hour of play. We have a totally renovated roster but we’re determined. I think we showed that tonight by bouncing back from this poor first set”.

CASA MODENA – MARMI LANZA VERONA 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-19)

CASA MODENA: Manià (L), Sala 7, Quesque 10, Celitans 19, Kooy 10, Casadei, Vesely 4, Molteni 2, Pinelli, Baranowicz 3, Piscopo 2. DNP Catellani, Deroo. Coach. Lorenzetti.

MARMI LANZA VERONA: Zingel 1, Rak 8, Kosmina, Ter Horst 11, Gotsev 5, Meoni, Bolla, Pesaresi (L), Gavotto 10, Peacock, De Marchi 7. DNP Centomo, Fedrizzi. Coach. Bagnoli.

Modena could not have wished for a better start to the season. With Lorenzetti back on the bench after ten years spent at the club and the title won in 2002, the young Modena squad offered a convincing performance against Verona, showing great energy, will and good fundamentals too. Latvian Gundars Celitans shined with 5 aces and 3 blocks for a total of 19 points, while Baranowicz served his spikers very well.

Angelo Lorenzetti (coach Casa Modena): “I was overwhelmed with emotion when I got on court. I really have to thank the boys. It was extremely important for us to start off well. We obviously have to keep our feet on the ground and keep training well, and rather do better than this week in which the arrival of the league debut took its toll. We have no idea where we stand, we’ll find out as the season goes on. On Saturday we’re going to Vibo, and you’ve seen what they’ve done today”.

Bruno Bagnoli (coach Marmi Lanza Verona): “Modena played better than us especially on the serve and on high balls, which was made the difference. Gavotto and De Marchi were not at their best tonight. We have to keep training to get used to this rhythm, that is to say, the Serie A1”.

BCC-NEP CASTELLANA GROTTE – BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO 1-3 (20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 20-25)

BCC-NEP CASTELLANA GROTTE: Menzel 4, Elia 2, Ricciardello 2, Paparoni (L), Falaschi 3, Ferreira, Sabbi 20, Ferreira 9, Cester 9, Casoli 11. DNP Dolfo, Kindgard. Coach. Gulinelli.

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO: Mastrangelo 5, Ngapeth 14, De Pandis (L), Wijsmans 14, Kohut 7, Grbic 1, Della Lunga 1, Sokolov 25, Rossi 3. DNP Antonov, Marchisio, Galliani, Abdelaziz. Coach. Piazza.

Cuneo have probably found it harder than expected as Castellana fought hard in spite of being without Yosifov, Dolfo and Kindgard. Castellana is defeated but the third set win is a good sign for the future.

Giulio Sabbi (BCC-NEP Castellana Grotte): “We could have done better at the end of the first two sets but I think there were more positive than negative. Cuneo is a great team and we did not do too bad. We have to improve in some areas but I believe this was a rather positive debut against a top quality opponent”.

Nikola Grbic (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “It’s not been an easy opening game and we knew it wouldn’t. We’re like everyone, looking to reach our best. It’s never easy to play away from home the first one. We faded too much in the third, we took a risk by letting them back in the game. Still, we managed to start off strong in the fourth and finish it off”.
