Del Monte Super Cup

Referees

The referees that will whistle the Super Cup game between Trentino and Macerata in Modena on Sunday September 20 have been named: Nico Castagna (Bari) and Simone Santi (Città di Castello).  Castagna has been a Serie A ref since 1997 while Santi has been around since 1994. Santi has also been a FIVB ref since 2011 and was at the Olympic Games in 2012, refereeing the women’s semi-final between Brazil and Japan.

Osmany Juantorena and Cristian Savani heat it up

Macerata and Trentino will meet for the 37th time in Sunday’s Super Cup (21-15 Trento). The two squads met six times last season alone between the league, Champions League and the playoffs (V-Day): three wins each, two games ended on a 3-0 score, both for Trentino, and 4 at the tie-break (3-1 for Macerata). Second meeting in the Super Cup as Macerata had swept the Italian champs 3-0 back in 2008.

Osmany Juantorena (Itas Diatec Trentino): “Looking back on the V-Day 2012 and the outcome will be of no use to us: Since we’ve been back in training in August, we have stopped thinking about the past. We’re going into the future with a spirit of revenge, even if we know Macerata will always be a particularly tough opponent to beat, but at the same time we know our strengths. We want to start this new season with a good victory, to dedicate to our fans. If we can play like in the first two sets in Wednesday’s friendly against Piacenza we’ll have a good chance”.

Cristian Savani (Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “It’s a do-or-die game and we know for well that anything at all can happen. So don’t ask me to make any prediction because I really think it’s impossible to do so. Both teams have the same chance to win and both will be very keen to snatch it, it’s a very important trophy. Let’s not forget this is the first game of the season, the teams are still working on their game, especially ourselves, it’s unlikely that we’ll be able to play our best volleyball. But there will definitely be maximum competitive spirit and determination on court, which means show time guaranteed”.
