Macerata became Italian champion 2012 at the end of a thrilling encounter in front of 11200 spectators in Assago’s Mediolanum Forum. This turned into a memorable final, a never-ending one (2’19) that overwhelmed the fans. Giuliani’s team made a terrific achievement by coming back from a 2-0 deficit against last year’s champions to clinch it 22-20 in the tie-break. This is Macerata’s second league title in history. Jiri Kovar was named MVP.
Alberto Giuliani (coach Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “We really wanted this title and we got it by fighting until the last minute. A huge win coming back from 2-0 down. We played with heart and great fighting spirit”.
Igor Omrcen (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “I couldn’t leave this fantastic club without a victory, without this victory. I have spent 5 amazing years in Macerata. I am happy and proud”.
Jiri Kovar (MVP Sustenium, Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “I am happy for myself, I dedicate it this win to me, and obviously to the team. In the first two sets, we played as individuals, then we proved we were a superb group of lads that never give up”.
Dragan Travica (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “We took revenge on the Italian Cup final, but I think this trophy is much more important. We showed how united we were and that we could leave it out on the floor. In the third set, they struggled to serve while we sorted our block-dig out. I am thrilled, we were almost down and buried after the first two sets but we managed to get back on our feet and take this league title home, my first league title”.
Jean-Francois Exiga (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “I had been waiting for this final for too long. We knew we were close to Trento in terms of play and potential and today we proved it. I would like to dedicate this title to my family, to my girlfriend and my grand-mother who is unfortunately in hospital”.
Emanuele Birarelli (Itas Diatec Trentino): “We have rarely lost after taking a 2-0 lead and that’s the worst thing that can happen. We are extremely disappointed with the way it happened. We wanted to seal it too much which hindered us. We should have handled better our advantage, but instead we let them believe and take confidence”.
Jan Stokr (Itas Diatec Trentino): “I am sad and disappointed with my performance, I am sorry not to have done enough”.
Raphael (Itas Diatec Trentino): “It’s been a final played at a very high level, shame we did not play with the same aggressiveness and fighting spirit in the third set. Unfortunately, we did not manage to finish it off, but I still think this was a positive season”.
