The dreams of a semi-final vanished very quickly for Roma against a Trento team that will take part in its fifth consecutive semi-final. While Trento will meet Latina in the next round, Roma will be competing in the Challenge Cup qualifications.

Emanuele Birarelli (Itas Diatec Trentino): “I was a bit afraid of this group I have to admit. But we’ve done very well in every circumstances and especially tonight after a tense start. Now we’ll face Latina in the semi-final, the pressure and expectations will be as usual all on our shoulders”.

Andrea Giani (coach M. Roma Volley): “We played face to face only in the first set, which we could have won if we had converted a couple of important counters. We failed to do so and Trento punished us. In those games, it’s not enough to play well for just one set to hope to win the game. From the second set on, the difference was too obvious”.

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA – ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23)

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Lampariello, Pajenk, Savani 21, Exiga (L), Parodi, Stankovic 9, Kovar 8, Monopoli, Van Walle, Travica 5, Omrcen 21, Podrascanin 7. Coach. Giuliani.

ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA: Rossini (L), Zhukouski, Mckniff, Conte 9, Nikic 5, Molteni, Buti 11, Rooney 9, De Cecco 4, Gavotto 20, Shumov 5. DNP Ciabattini, Roumeliotis. Coach. Zanini.

In the decisive game of Group B, Macerata made it into its tenth semi-final thanks to a 3-1 victory over Monza. Cuneo will be its opponent in the next round. MVP: Travica.

Dragan Travica (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “I have always had to fight in my life to reach important targets, on and off the court, so it’s logical that today we made it the hard way, there was a lot at stake and on the other side of the net there was an excellent team. We are extremely happy, this was a tight group, we prepared ourselves well and I think you could see that tonight. This is an important first step towards our goal, and now we’re looking ahead to the series against Cuneo, which I believe to be the best team in the league in blocking. This means we’ll have to step up one more level, especially in attack, not a spike can be taken for granted”.

Simone Buti (Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza): “We have wasted some good opportunities in the second set, as for the rest I think our performance cannot be criticized. The players gave their best for the club in this important event, but when a team like Macerata manages to serve like it did tonight, there’s not much you can do”.

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO – COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA 3-0 (26-24, 32-30, 28-26)

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO: Mastrangelo 8, Henno (L), Ngapeth 10, Fortunato 1, Van Lankvelt, Wijsmans 15, Vissotto Neves 27, Grbic 1, Caceres, Patriarca. DNP Rossi, Pieri, Baranowicz. Coach. Placì.

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA: Marra (L), Papi 8, Zhekov 1, Nikolov 18, Kampa 3, Zlatanov 15, Holt 8, Tencati 6. DNP Kral, Sidibé, Massari, De Oliveira, Binaghi. Coach. Monti.

Cuneo swept Piacenza and qualified for the league semi-finals, the seventh in a row. They will take on Macerata, where Game 1 will take place on Thursday. MVP: Leandro Vissotto.

Wout Wijsmans (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “What mattered was the win and we did it. We have been good today, especially mentally, in the second and third set, which have been the most difficult ones. I have to say that this is the first time this year that we play at such a good level as a team. You could see the players were ready to fight for each other and that was psychologically very important”.

Luca Monti (coach Copra Elior Piacenza): “Being beaten 3-0 at the end of a game like that is a bit disappointing. It’s obvious that they have found a little something more than us. We lacked that tiny bit of luck and ability to finish it off when it mattered. We made too many mistakes on the serve and attack when we shouldn’t, they played better at the net and on the serve”.

ANDREOLI LATINA – CASA MODENA 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23)

ANDREOLI LATINA: Rivera Caamano 5, Pantaleon 5, Gitto 9, Sottile 4, Jarosz 11, De Pandis (L), Guemart, Tailli (L), Troy 8, Galabinov 1, Diachkov, Cester 12, Fragkos 7. Coach. Prandi.

CASA MODENA: Manià (L), Sala 13, Kadziewicz 7, Dennis 14, Carletti, Bellei 3, Esko 5, Martino 5, Casoli 2, Anderson 19. DNP Catellani. Coach. Bagnoli.

Huge surprise in the quarter-final coming from Latina. Not happy with a superb upset against Belluno, Latina made back-to-back breakthrough with a 3-1 win over Modena to qualify for the playoffs semi-finals.

Daniele Sottile (Andreoli Latina): “The first set was tough, we’re a young team, not many of the boys have played playoffs before, and a tense beginning was normal. We needed a break to get going, and it came in the series completed by Rivera. From then on, everything was much easier. This is a great result for us, we’ll celebrate today, then we’ll focus on the Trento series. They are huge favorite, but we’ll play our game, just like we’ve done here in Belluno”.

Matthew Anderson (Casa Modena): “We started off brightly as we wanted to by taking the first set, but it was not enough. The key moment was in the second set, in the middle of it they escaped and we just couldn’t get back. They gained confidence while we stopped playing our best volleyball. It’s a shame, we could have done better in those two days, it did not go as we expected”.
