Change at the top, Macerata winter champ.

MARMI LANZA VERONA – LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA 2-3 (33-31, 21-25, 40-38, 14-25, 9-15)

MARMI LANZA VERONA: Popp 17, Kosmina 2, Ter Horst 1, Calderan, Meoni 1, Smerilli (L), Patriarca 9, Zingel 13, Casarin, Kromm 17, Postiglioni, Gasparini 25. Coach. Bagnoli.

LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA: Lampariello, Pajenk 4, Savani 27, Exiga (L), Parodi, Stankovic 5, Kovar 17, Monopoli, Van Walle 1, Travica 3, Omrcen 25, Podrascanin 15. Coach. Giuliani.

The game turned into a never-ending story as 2248 fans watched on. Verona would not let go, fighting through the third set to clinch it 40-38 but in the end Macerata won the tie-break and top spot as Verona’s Zingel was MVP.

Aidan Zingel (Marmi Lanza Verona): “Macerata is really strong, there are no words to describe such a night. We went very close, we did a great job to clinch two very tight sets that lasted over the 25 points. We showed all the fighting spirit we had. The next game against Cuneo will surely be as interesting, but hopefully we’ll get a victory. We’ll have to give 100% and be sharp on the serve”.

Jiri Kovar (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “In the sets we won, we played some good volleyball. We knew we were facing a tough task. Verona played a good game, and the spikers did a good job but we are happy with a victory that gives us the top spot in the league”.

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO – CASA MODENA 3-2 (22-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-13)

BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO: Mastrangelo 7, Henno (L), Ngapeth 14, Fortunato 10, Van Lankvelt, Wijsmans 16, Vissotto Neves 20, Grbic 2, Caceres, Patriarca, Pieri (L), Baranowicz 3. DNP Rossi. Coach. Gulinelli.

CASA MODENA: Manià (L), Sala 12, Dennis 21, Carletti, Kooy 3, Bellei, Esko 3, Martino 10, Casoli 1, Anderson 14, Piscopo 11. DNP Catellani, Yosifov. Coach. Bagnoli.

The first half of season was sealed with a classic of Italian volleyball: Cuneo versus Modena. A sold out crowd witnessed an unpredictable encounter in which Cuneo came back from a 2-0 deficit. Before the game, Leandro Vissotto received the MVP award for the month of December.

Hubert Henno (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “Modena played well the first two sets and was stronger than us, then we got better and found the resources to turn things around, we never gave up. This is the most important thing and the key to the game: our reaction and tenacity. We made less mistakes from the third set and played more intelligently”.

Daniele Bagnoli (coach Casa Modena): “We played very well for two sets, then Cuneo stepped up, especially Vissotto and Wijsmans. And when Baranowicz came on, things have changed. A Henno dig proved key in the tie-break: congratulations to him, because these are balls only him can contain. Overall, though, I expected a certain response from my team and I got it”.

ENERGY RESOURCES SAN GIUSTINO – COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA 3-2 (15-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-19, 15-9)

ENERGY RESOURCES SAN GIUSTINO: Creus Larry 15, Rauwerdink 13, Patak 10, Mc Kibbin 3, Cozzi 2, Finazzi 8, Petkovic, Tholse 1, Lo Bianco (L), Giovi (L), Sammelvuo 1, Urnaut 19. DNP Bartoletti. Coach. De Giorgi.

COPRA ELIOR PIACENZA: Marra (L), Kral 1, Sidibé 1, Papi 13, Zhekov 6, Nikolov 16, Massari 1, Kampa, Zlatanov 15, Holt 8, Tencati 12, Penchev. DNP Marretta. Coach. Lorenzetti.

San Giustino finished the first half of season on a high with a tie-break win over Piacenza. Great atmosphere in the Palakemon arena as San Giustino registered its second straight victory. MVP: Tine Urnaut.

Tine Urnaut (Energy Resources San Giustino): “We are thrilled. We were very disappointing in the first set but we were back on track in the second. In the third we faded again but from the fourth set on we found consistency. And our supporters gave us a great hand as always”.

Samuele Papi (Copra Elior Piacenza): “We made a lot of silly mistakes, especially in the second set. San Giustino got better and won it. When you fail to seal the games when you should, you deserve to lose”.

M. ROMA VOLLEY – FIDIA PADOVA 0-3 (26-28, 23-25, 21-25)

M. ROMA VOLLEY: Lebl 7, Passier 4, Paolucci 1, Paparoni (L), Maruotti 6, Zaytsev 16, Bencz 7, Sabbi 6, Cisolla. DNP Antonucci, Boninfante, Puliti, Corsano. Coach. Giani.

FIDIA PADOVA: Schwarz 13, Gonzalez 5, Tiberti, Cricca, Rosso 6, De Marchi 3, Simeonov 16, Semenzato 8, Suljagic 5, Koshikawa (L). DNP Garghella, Zingaro, Giannotti. Coach. Montagnani.

Roma faced this encounter with the cup qualification already secured as the result would only determine which opponent they would face. Still without Bjelica, and with Boninfante rested, Roma was swept. MVP: Gonzales.

Andrea Giani (coach M.Roma Volley): “We played poorly like in the game against Piacenza. Our level of play is under par compared to what we’d done so far. We played as individuals not as a team”.

Andrea Semenzato (Fidia Padova): “We played a good game against a Roma team which was not hundred percent fit. We still had a few lapses and that prevented us from better results in other games. The game was tight for two sets, then we took a good lead in the third which we managed to hold on to until the end”.

ANDREOLI LATINA – ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 26-24)

ANDREOLI LATINA: Rivera Caamano 12, Gitto 16, Sottile 1, Jarosz 26, De Pandis (L), Guemart, Troy, Diachkov, Cester 16, Fragkos 9. DNP Hardy-dessources, Tailli, Galabinov. Coach. Prandi.

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO: Kaziyski 21, Birarelli 14, Della Lunga, Juantorena 15, Vieira De Oliveira 1, Sokolov 3, Djuric 4, Colaci (L), Stokr 10, Burgsthaler 5. DNP Zygadlo, Brinkman. Coach. Stoytchev.

Huge breakthrough for Latina which disposed of the Italian champions at the end of a very spectacular game. Latina played with determination and fighting spirit, without being unfazed by the fact they were up against the giants of this world. MVP: Jarosz

Enrico Cester (Andreoli Latina): “We got off to a superb start in 2012. We did especially well at the net and on the serve, we played at a high level in the other areas of the game too. I had never won against Trento, this is a great feeling”.

Matey Kaziyski (Itas Diatec Trentino): “More than a bad day for us, it was our opponent who put us under pressure with the serve, playing extremely focused and not giving anything away. We made the mistake of getting nervous instead of finding the solutions. Still, in the end the level of play was excellent”.

SISLEY BELLUNO – CMC RAVENNA 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-17)

SISLEY BELLUNO: Abdelaziz, Fei 17, Horstink 19, Farina (L), Kohut 16, Curti 1, De Togni 7, Suxho 4, Antonov, Ogurcak 6. DNP Szabò, Dolfo, Sorato. Coach. Piazza.

CMC RAVENNA: Mengozzi 10, Leonardi 1, Bendandi, Corvetta 1, Sirri 16, Tabanelli (L), Verhanneman, Quiroga 10, Moro 11, Brunner 6, Gruszka 6. DNP Gallosti, Roberts. Coach. Babini.

Belluno had the better of Ravenna 3-1 and moved up to sixth in the table thanks to the defeats of Roma and Vibo Valentia. MVP: Robert Horstink.

Roberto Piazza (coach Sisley Belluno): “The first set was not played up to our usual standard. Fortunately I did not have to say much to the players, they knew they had started badly. I’m glad we moved up the table but shame we wasted some opportunities in this first half of season, I think we could have been fifth. From the third set we played like a good team, we got better. Horstink did a great job to give us to necessary push with his serves”.

Antonio Babini (coach CMC Ravenna): “We did not manage to keep up with the rhythm of our opponents. In the second set we played with too much pressure, and we faded. We might have got too greedy after the first set. You can’t argue with the quality of the players Belluno has, they made the difference today. Unfortunately, we have to be perfect against such a team, and we haven’t been today”.

TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA – ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA 0-3 (20-25, 23-25, 18-25)

TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA: Cernic 6, Diaz 11, Grassano, Rak, Olli 4, Klapwijk 14, Barone 4, Fanuli (L), Nikolov 4. DNP Falasca, Mignolo, Esposito, Crigna. Coach. Blengini.

ACQUA PARADISO MONZA BRIANZA: Rossini (L), Conte 11, Nikic 8, Forni 3, Buti 7, Rooney 1, Kaszap, De Cecco 1, Gavotto 15, Shumov 2. DNP Ciabattini, Molteni, Roumeliotis. Coach. Zanini.

The heart of Vibo was not enough to slow down Monza, who took maximum advantage of the hosts’ weaknesses. MVP: Luciano De Cecco

Gianlorenzo Blengini (coach Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “In volleyball, you cannot improvise anything, and having to work without the starting setter in just three days of game preparation made things really complicated for us. The boys fought with pride but in the end Monza’s quality prevailed, they did not let us much space to maneuver”.

Luciano De Cecco (Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza): “It’s obvious that Vibo without its starting setter had problems. We did not know Olli so at the start we studied them a bit and then we did what we had to do. I think it went a bit easier than what we expected”.
