League table

Casa Modena 14, Lube Banca Marche Macerata 13, Itas Diatec Trentino 12, Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo 11, Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza 9, Andreoli Latina 8, Marmi Lanza Verona 7, Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia 6, Sisley Belluno 6, M. Roma Volley 5, Energy Resources San Giustino 5, Fidia Padova 5, Copra Elior Piacenza 3, CMC Ravenna 1

Casa Modena – Itas Diatec Trentino

PAST ENCOUNTERS: 38 (23-15 Trento)

Daniele Bagnoli (Casa Modena): “The five games of last year’s semi-final were fantastic but this year it’s totally different. We have made many changes, it’s useless to make any comparisons. Facing Trentino as the league leader is a nice feeling, but we certainly haven’t forgotten how strong is Trento. They are fully aware of their ability and even if they play many games, they basically have two starting six that can beat any opponent. Playing those games in our arena is always special. We’ll see how our new players react in such an encounter. They will put us under great pressure with their serve: they hit it hard and rarely make mistakes. I’ve watched Juantorena on the serve in this beginning of season; I think he might be the best server of all time. That’s why this game as well as the one against Macerata will be two good tests to understand where we stand”.

Jan Stokr (Itas Diatec Trentino): “It’s never a game like the others against Modena. It couldn’t be now given how important are the points at stake. It’s always great to play in this arena. The atmosphere is electric and even as an opponent, that is really motivating to try to win there. Modena is not the leader by chance: they play well and have an excellent coach. To beat them, we’ll have to play our best volleyball. Hopefully, we’ll erase last season’s semi-final game 2 and 4 from our memory with a good performance here. Many things have changed since that playoff series for both teams but inevitably, if you want to stop Modena, you have to read well Esko and Dennis at the net”.

Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo – CMC Ravenna

PAST ENCOUNTERS: None

Wout Wijsmans (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “We’re coming off a poor defeat in the Champions League, we lacked character. We did not manage to react and we lacked energy mentally. Now Ravenna is coming over, a game we have to win at all cost and which is important. I know this group can make it, we have had many difficulties and tough moments and we overcame them. That’s why I know we can immediately bounce back, and find the character that we did not have on Wednesday against Budejovice”.

Paolo Badiali (Sport director CMC Ravenna): “This is the typical game in which there is a clear favourite, so we can face it without any pressure. We can count on this aspect to try to make it difficult for a team that his much stronger than ours”.

Energy Resources San Giustino – M. Roma Volley

PAST ENCOUNTERS: 6 (5-1 Roma)

Andrea Sartoretti (Sport director Energy Resources San Giustino): “Roma is in good form. After two initial defeats, in a difficult moment, they obtained an excellent victory in a tough place to go in Vibo Valentia. They turned things around there. Even at home, despite Belluno’s comeback, Giani’s team won again. I expect a reaction from my team which has to forget about the last two losses. We have the resources to bounce back and end this poor run”.

Alberto Cisolla (M. Roma Volley): “It would be a terrible mistake to underestimate the difficulty of this away game in San Giustino. This is an excellent team, we’ll have to be very aggressive, as much as in the past two games. It will be important to remain consistent and not fade as we have done against Belluno, which did not allow us to seal the match with a better result. Trying to keep improving is fundamental, this is on this that we build our future success”.

Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia – Lube Banca Marche Macerata

PAST ENCOUNTERS: 17 (13-4 Macerata)

Fabio Fanuli (Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia): “Very tough game ahead against one of the favourite to win the league title. On the other hand, we have seen that against another favourite for the title, Cuneo, we have been able to do a great job. In my opinion, this will be a battle, like all the games we have played so far. They are undeniably very strong in attack and especially on the serve. That’s why we’ll have to do well to contain them in order then to aim for their weaknesses”.

Igor Omrcen (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “Our goal is to get to the break being as high up in the table as possible. We will do everything possible to stay unbeaten. Still, this will be a very difficult road game against a good team, always tending to have great performances against the big teams, especially when they play on home soil. We’ll need to face this game with a good attitude, something we have not always been perfect in our latest outings”.

Sisley Belluno – Fidia Padova

PAST ENCOUNTERS: 61

Roberto Piazza (coach Sisley Belluno): “We are not stronger because we have this name on our shirt, but it’s clear that we have to bear with it, we have to realise that until the end of the season our opponent will never give anything away. If they have the Sisley on the other side of the net, they’re like bulls seeing red. We’re expecting a tough derby on Sunday, against a team that, like us, is coming off a tie-break loss. But they could easily have won 3-1 over Modena. Padova was in also 12-9 up in the fifth before losing, just like we did against Vibo. It can happen to anyone, this teaches you that a game is never finished until the last point is scored. Padova plays good volleyball and their performance sent a clear message they intend on staying up in the A1. But Belluno wants to stay up too”.

Mattia Rosso (Fidia Padova): “It’s never easy to face a team like Belluno. Despite the fact they have made a loto f changes compared to last season, they have great champions, first of all Fei. I think they are looking for the win that will allow them to get away from the group of the second half of the league table. But we have no fear to face them at all. Thanks to the Modena game, we started to believe in our ability. We played against Belluno twice in friendly games, but we know league games are totally different”.

Marmi Lanza Verona – Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza

PAST ENCOUNTERS: 14 (10-4 Monza).

Stefano Patriarca (Marmi Lanza Verona): “The game against Monza will be important for us, this is not a do-or-die game but i twill tell us what this Verona team is made of. We’ll play at home and here anything at all can happen. Our will to win grows day after day and we pull together to get a good result. In Monza, they built an excellent team to face both the league and the Cev Cup. They have top quality player such as Rooney, assisted by the experienced Gavotto. But we’ll do everything to win”.

Emanuele Zanini (coach Acqua Paradiso Monza Brianza): “Sunday’s game will be very important for us to understand where we stand and to realise if we have the means to reach our targets. Verona is an excellent team, with players of great experience, Popp and Meoni, just to name a couple. Besides, their fans create a heated atmosphere, they really support their team: Verona always has an advantage on home ground. We’ll have to be clever and stay focused throughout. We have to take care of every detail”.

Andreoli Latina – Copra Elior Piacenza

PAST ENCOUNTERS: 20 (12-8 Piacenza)

Gérard Hardy-Dessources (Andreoli Latina): “We’ll be playing against a good team, who has excellent playerd like Nikolov, Zlatanov and Tencati. They haven’t got oiff to a good start, though, they faced excellent teams and did not gather many points. We have the opportunity to take advantage of this situation. I won the Champions League with Nikolov in Tours, which was coach by Serniotti, it’s not the first time I meet him, we have faced each other in European Cup and with our national teams. They also have my conational Mory Sidibé, who is a very promising outside hitter”.

Davide Marra (Copra Elior Piacenza): “Our goals have not changed for this game: play well and get some points. Overall, our performance last Sunday was good but there is still work to be done. This is a new team but we can already see the improvement made since the beginning of the season. As for the rest, we will need time to adjust, but let’s take one step at a time. Latina plays very well, they have gathered important points so far, against Cuneo to make just one example. In terms of tactic and technique, they are well-prepared, they have excellent players. It won’t be easy for us”.
