2011 CEV Champions League Final Four

Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo out: Trentino BetClic to face Jastrzebski Wegiel in semi-final

Big disappointment for Cuneo who went out of the Champions League at the playoffs 6 against Dinamo Moscow. All the more so following their victory in the game, only to be ousted in the Golden set.

This means two Russian teams will meet in the semi-final as Kazan had the better of Polish side Belchatow. The other semi-final will be Trentino versus Jastrzebski Wegiel, team coached by Lorenzo Bernardi, “Mister century”. The Polish side knocked out Maaseik, Belgium, in the playoffs 6.

Treviso and Macerata play for cup glory

On Saturday, Treviso travels to Poland to meet Kedzierzyn-Kozle in the Cev Cup final return leg. The Italians lost the first leg and a win on any score will get Treviso to the Golden set, which would decide the winner of the competition.

Dante Boninfante (Sisley Treviso): “The last defeat is behind us. We are confident we can go there, get the result and bring the cup home. In Belluno, we had played poorly part of the second set, and definitely the fourth which handed them the tie-break. We should have done better in certain situations without relaxing. There were a couple of unlucky episodes too: I crushed into a camera man twice while I was saving some important balls. Anyway, the return game will be a new story. It’s true we could have won the first leg but let’s move on and focus on the return leg. We are eager to turn things around, impose our rhythm and reach the Golden set. We are very confident, we know we have our chances”.

Macerata hits the road for the last time in Europe and with confidence. The Italians won the Challenge Cup first leg easily on a 3-0 score over Izmir and they will try to gather another win in Turkey on Sunday and the trophy. This would be the first Challenge Cup in the club’s history. A loss would lead to the decisive Golden set.

Cristian Savani (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “Wednesday’s victory is definitely fundamental but at the same time we shouldn’t think the trophy is ours. The international regulations this season forces you to win the second leg too, and on Sunday it will be anything but a stroll. Izmir is an excellent team, it proved it yesterday night and we will also have to face a special atmosphere. I played many times in Turkey, in Smirne too, and the fans are making their presence felt a lot, this is really a big plus to the home team. We’re expecting a tough battle, and I think that to win it we’ll have to focus exclusively on ourselves and our game. We must try to impose our game with the same attitude we had in the first leg. We are just one step from our target, we really don’t want to lose now”.
