The fans filled a nearly sold out gym and became the seventh man on court for Cuneo, which offered a brilliant performance to get rid of the Russians of Belgorod in the Champions League playoff 12 first leg. Giuliani’s team needed just over an hour as it was very effective from the 9 meters with 12 aces in 3 sets (Parodi 4, Mastrangelo and Volkov 3, and Wijmans 2). The Russians gave Cuneo a game only in the first set.

Tie-break win for Treviso over French Sete

SISLEY TREVISO – ARAGO DE SETE 3-2 (23-25, 26-24, 22-25, 26-24, 15-11)

SISLEY TREVISO: Bjelica 9, Bonnfante 1, Bontje 14, Elgarten, Farina (L), Horstink 19, Kovar 20, Maruotti 5, Papi 10, Szabo, Marcelinho 2. DNP Anzani.

ARAGO DE SETE: Rowlandson (L), Vesely 8, Tournier, Toniutti 2, Simovski 28, Senger 16, Barais 10, Granier 1, Geiler 17. DNP Ragondet, Puig, Mistoco.

Fei and De Togni KO because of the flu, and Farina not hundred per cent, Treviso found the resources to overcome Sete at the tie-break in the Cev Cup quarter final first leg. Sete made it extremely difficult for Treviso but the latter showed perseverance, relying  a lot on Kovar, captain Papi and Marcelinho.

Roberto Piazza (coach Sisley Treviso): “It’s been a tough game, we knew Sete was a difficult opponent. We had played a tie-break against Cuneo and we had two starters out, so it was even more complicated. We showed character, even when Boninfante had to leave his place to Marcelinho because of physical problems. Marcelinho played well in the clutch moments, I have in mind the block that earned us the tie-break. There was a lot of positive, tonight is a victory we have to build on to make further progress. We’ll be looking at the return game with confidence, we have a good chance”.

Not even the polar cold of Siberia could stop Macerata’s positive streak. In the Challenge Cup quarter final first leg, the Italians had the better of Surgut thanks to a spectacular come back after trailing 0-2 and 17-19. This is a good step towards the qualification as the return game will be in Italy next Wednesday at 8.30pm.

With Omrcen left home because of a back problem, and Martino not at his best yet, coach Berruto decided to stick to Sunday’s victorious starting six in San Giustino, with young Belgium Van Walle on court.
