Once again, a trophy will be played between Cuneo and Trento. The Italian Champs needed five sets, however, to overcome Macerata, which fought hard and went very close from the final. In the tie-break, Vermiglio sent Macerata 5-2 up, but it was all tied at 9-9. Cuneo then kept a point advantage and converted its first match point on a Nikolov block on Martino.
Alberto Giuliani (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “We’re in the final and we’re extremely happy. We managed to get there but our game was not very good, especially in the block-dig department, which is usually very effective. Savani and Omrcen were the most positive players for Macerata and the fact we are in the final despite this performance shows our strength”.
Vladimir Nikolov (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo): “Character was the difference tonight: we made mistakes and we struggled on some aspects of the game. This game shows what a winning mentality we have because we played right until the last one. Now, we have to focus on the Trento game: when you play against them, it’s always difficult, you can never take anything for granted. Kaziyski-Juantorena is one of the best pairs of spikers, that’s also why it will be a great game”.
Marko Podrascanin (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “It was a very tight game, we proved we were the only team able to give Trento and Cuneo a good game. In my opinion, we played fairly well, at times you need a little luck to win it, and we did not have it. In the tie-break, Cuneo’s experience was key”.
Cristian Savani (Lube Banca Marche Macerata): “The last few points of the tie-break cost us the game, we had started so well. Each point is worth gold when it is that tight. We are very disappointed, I know we would have had our chances in the final. We have been a little naïve and paid the price”.
