The holders, Trentino, will defend the title won last year in Prague. It will meet the Russians of Dinamo Moscow in the final. This is what came out of the semi-finals played in Lodz’s Atlas Arena, Poland.

In front of a 10.000 crowd, Trentino won as favourite 3-1 against the Slovenians of Bled. Three sets of the four played proved to be one-way traffic. Despite Raphael’s absence, the inevitable tiredness following the intense period of late, and Juantorena not hundred percent fit, Trentino only found it difficult in the second set. It had totally dominated the first set and when Bled drew level, the Italians took over again, taking advantage of the opponent’s mistakes in the third and playing better at the net and reception in the fourth set. Juantorena had an excellent game with 14 points and 48% in attack, but Kaziyski and Vissotto were not at their best in spite of scoring 14 and 15 points respectively. Finally, Birarelli and Sala had positive performances.

“We knew the semi-final was not going to be an easy game – said coach Radostin Stoytchev – Even after dominating the first set, we never took the victory for granted. Things went to perfection until 16-10 in the second, then we stumbled, losing all the momentum built until then. We started to make too many mistakes and were not as efficient in attack. We were definitely tired after the intense week we’ve had and Bled played well in dig and at the net. Although we did not play well, we won the game, which is something significant. Now we have to immediately forget about tonight’s victory and start thinking about tomorrow’s decisive game”.

The final against Dinamo Moscow (2.45pm) will be Trento’s fourth final this season. Indeed, it will also play the league final on V-Day.
